  • Best Automatic Feeder???

    Hey All-

So for Thanksgiving I'm off to visit my best friend who moved to Ireland 2 years ago and will be gone for 8 days (yes you can be jealous!).

We are trying to get a person (either our neighbor or a professional) to come feed our cats and my Fish and Frogs- but they would only come by once a day- and with my Platies seeming to pop out about a dozen new fry a week I figure one feeding will NOT make a happy living enviornment while I'm gone.

So I'm looking for a good automatic feeder that could do the trick of feeding two times a day and have enough food for 8 days.

Oh the info I'm sure you'll ask:

    3 tanks: 2 20 Gallons, 1 10 gallon

1 20g Tank: tropicals (Betta, amazon tetras, mollies, two small ablino xenopus frogs)

1 20g Tank: GloFish, Neons, Mollies and LOTs of Platies (3 adults, rest fry oldest maybe 2 months) [can't make it to the auction this weekend to sell :( ]

    1 10g Tank:  1 Large Xenopus

Only worried about the 2 20s, the frog only eats once day, unless I give her feeder fish (which I will before I leave)

    Thanks!

Most feeders I have seen will feed multiple times a day..  Some up to 4 times a day.

Hmm...I'm not too familiar with automatic feeders, but do have a question - how much are you willing to spend?

I've found the Eheim to be the best of the automatic feeders.  If it were me, and I was only going to be gone for 8 days I would not worry about feeding the fish.  Just be sure to feed them first thing when you get home.  I have cats as well and they are really pretty self sufficient.  If you leave plenty of food and a clean cat box, they would be okay on their own as well, or just have your assistant pet keepers check on their food and water level a couple of times.  Frogs, not that one I know absolutely nothing about.

Well if it's truly worth it- I might be willing to spend it- Reality is I prefer to keep it below $20 per feeder- but I realize that may not cover what I want.  I just didn't know if people here had used them before or had a real prefernce.  I've tried couple of the cheap ones but they are what you pay for!

            Re: Best Automatic Feeder???

I have Xenopus frogs too and they should be fine going DAYS or even a week at a time without food...the ones in your community tank will eventually eat your fish though, it's inevitable, even if they are fed all of the pellets they can eat... I have a 10g with two very large ones in there and I usually go and buy like 40 feeder goldfish from Mike and just let them go in their tank and that holds them for a few months. They will eat the dead ones too, so don't worry about how the feeders are fragile... When the goldfish are all gone, I go get more...they kinda feed themselves automatically... If the ones in your community tank are smaller than the one in your 10g, don't put them with the one in the 10g lol he'll eat them... Also, the frogs shouldn't have any gravel in the tank that can fit into their mouths...they will end up eating it and die...I lost a few frogs at the beginning due to this...and this problem was only listed on one (in very small print) out of all of the websites I used for research. Good luck on your search for feeders! And have a safe trip to and from Ireland...yeah, I'm jealous.

A new Eheim, online, will run you about $40 or so, or since you have some time you might look on Ebay as well.  I have several used ones left over from when I was working out of town.  If I can find them, I may bring one or two to the auction, but putting my hands on them right now would be a pretty big challenge.

Glad to know others have enjoyed Xenopus too- I know them pretty well- my friends use them for research- I like to raise them for fun instead.  Been doing it for 6 years now.

As for the two in the community tank- no worries there they are still smaller than any of the fish- hence the reason they are not with the big Frog.

Good to know about the Eheim- been wondering if they are worth the price.  I'll check Ebay-

And yes I know both the fish and frogs could go witout feeding- but so can I- I don't like to, so I doubt they do either!

How close are you to College Station and what are the dates you'll be gone? Depending on exactly where you are...maybe I could make it out there twice a day? I love platies and especially billions of fry, so I'd probably sit there for hours staring at your tanks. Lol!

Anyway...I know it's a lot to spend on automatic feeders, so if I can help you out, I'd love to :)

OOH...Do y'all ever get the reticulated pattern albinos? If so, I would really like to get one!!! Or, do y'all get the wild colored ones? Man, I really love these frogs! I have a male and female, but I think I've stunted them...I had to keep them in a smaller aquarium than they should have been in because so much was going on and it wasn't possible to get them a big aquarium...they are in good shape now in their 10g though!!

Yeah, I've been looking at automatic feeders myself since I'm down with this foot, and I've found Eheim to be the one everyone is recommending. I was thinking about printing the prices off of petco.com and taking them to one of their stores...but I think I looked and petsmart.com had a bigger selection...do they honor their prices online at the stores?

                      Good luck!!

                        AnotherWoogie-

I'm on the westside of Houston near Beltway 8- not exactly a hop, skip, and jump to get to me.  But we can still talk if you are intersted in platies- (I think I might just have few at the beginning of December that I'll be looking to trade/sell/give away   ) oh I'm gone Nov 20-28th basically Thanksgiving (had to stay 2 extra days due to ticket prices [would cost more to comeback before then]- Oh Shucks!   )

                        Loopy119-

Nope, none of the special Albinos- exactly like you see in the stores & obviously the normal color too, as you can see in my avatar pic.
As for price matching- depends on the store, most don't now since you also have to pay for S&H online- and that is already added in at the store. But you never know- it doesn't hurt to try, just few seconds of your time.

                          Re: Best Automatic Feeder???

Yeah, I just came back from Walmart and I got one of those $12.00 Penn Plax feeders...I'm going to give it a try on my Mollies. For the price it seems to be a good one... It says it will feed twice a day for up to 4 weeks. I am still going to be home, but I just can't get to my tanks and feed my babies as often as I would like to because of my broken ankle... Anyway, I'll probably test it tonight and install it tomorrow and I'll let y'all know how it goes!

What's really funny is that before I went to Walmart, I stopped at Petco to see what they had and the lady handed me the EXACT same brand and model and said it was just under $30.00....so, yeah, I'm glad I found it for cheaper at Walmart!!! :)

I have heard that it is better to crunch up your flakes before you load them into the feeder...I think I'm gonna use a trick I heard from someone on here (I think) and shake the flakes up a little at a time in a container with a marble. Seems easier than trying to crunch them by hand...lol...and cleaner.

Yep, and you get to take out some frustation at the same time, just think of the sound of the marble rattling as being the sound of someone's head rattling around inside

Hey Gator, no problem and I'll definitely want to do some platy business with you :)

I'm looking for interesting/rare colors. For instance, pure blue platies. I used to have one, but she had a little black spot on her tail and she was definitely my favorite fish. Hopefully we can do a nice fry trade some time :)
