  • Why Fish???

Just kinda curious as to why people get into fish keeping?

For me it started from early childhood I want to say I was 4 maybe 5 when my parents got the first aquarium it was nothing fancy but it started a life long passion I got out of the hobby when I joined the Military but got back into it when after 8.5 yrs in the military my doctors said I needed to find a stress reliever or I would be dead in less than 2yrs so I found myself once again spending hours looking at fish.

Like I said just kinda curious as to other peoples reasons.

I started fishing when I was 3. After that my obsession for fish never stopped.

I have had fish off and on since I was a kid... Goldfish, guppies and such when I was a kid. I have always loved the ocean and lakes and the creatures that live in them... I find them fascinating really. If I had my way I would have a dozen aquariums, but I would have to have a good divorce lawyer first..lol

From 7 years old - my lifelong best friend's Mom was 100% Japanese - her dad married her when overseas during war and brought her home. She stood all of 4' tall, never learned to drive, so built a bait business at home - minnows, shiners, worms, etc.....so I literally grew up working a bait business (still want to do that again!) People came to house to pickup bait, and on weekend, the husband delivered wholesale orders to retailers. So I literally grew up in a fish business! They had the most amazing aquariums in the house, so it was just second nature for me and I've kept fish since elementary school! It grew and grew.....and grew! Now fishkeeping is my passion - wouldn't know what to do without it. I also have a chronic health condition that requires me to manage stress -zero tolerance - so fishkeeping is my inside stress reliever and gardening is my outside stress reliever. Long blog, but that's my story!!!
            Thanks so much,
            Lydia

I asked for a tank when I was about 10 and by high school had 18 aquariums spread through the house. I had a bit of a break in my twenties, but returned and have learned far more. It is just amazing to me that after all these years I can still learn more and manage/care for tanks better. Sasha has been a terrific better half and deserves all the credit for the wonderful conditions of our tanks. She truly jumped in with both feet and has done better then even I have

                    wow.
                    nice thread.
I was brought up in game ship.
when i was 5 yrs old i bought betas from working around the neighborhood...
I then realized they do not like to be confined with another.
and so we started gambling on them.
thats how i started into fish.
                    and loved them ever since.
I love when my petros, trophs, simos lock up and bang.

I can remember the things my father taught me as a child. He was a outdoors man. He taught us how to hunt and fish. His Fish room was crazy. 2 car garage with rows of big tanks. I leand how to take care of them from him. Thats why I am old school fishkeeper...

                              Re: Why Fish???

My step dad left me a 10g saltwater tank when him and my mom moved out. He told me I could take care of it or let it die he didn't care. Well I wasn't just gonna let it die. My addiction grew from there....
