Re: Does anyone know anything about killifish?
Sorry,
Didn't see this posting earlier. Very nice pictures and lots of info on killies on it. Australes are very easy to keep, can be kept in groups and will work in community tanks too. Live longer than annuals as well. Good luck with them.

Re: Does anyone know anything about killifish?
Awesome thread here, folks ! I just learned 5 times more about these fish than what I thought I knew.
Mostly, I had no idea they were so peaceful. Like someone said...they've got big mouths for their size, so I misjudged them based on that. Now, I have a lot less reason to resist them. Thanks...I think. :?
pHMY MANTRA: Yes, I CAN have too many fishtanks!

Re: Does anyone know anything about killifish?
Quick note: Not all killis are peaceful. They can be vicious and it is not just a matter of size. Blue Gularis are notorious for tearing each other up, although they are one of the larger killis that are kept in the hobby. It is one of the reasons that single species tanks are recommended for most of them. Australes though are as peaceful as any other fish of similar size and temperment. Another good starter killi is the golden wonder. It is also a good community fish as long as the other fish will not fit in it's mouth.

Re: Does anyone know anything about killifish?
fishysue is right. One of the members of the DKA had what he called his "bad boy". He was not fit to breed, because he would try to peck the female's eye out. He ended up in a tank by himself because he always tried to kill his girls. (he was a blue gulari)
I have 2 males of different species in a tank together right now (one was the third in a reverse trio, and he kept eating the eggs, and the other's girlfriend died). They flare up at each other when they see each other, but then swim to opposite sides of the tank and ignore each other. If they were alone and in a bare tank though, they would probably fight all the time. I think the only reason they are ok is the breaks in their field of vision because of the driftwood and other fish.
They do have big mouths, and they will try to eat anything they think is food (I watched one eat a ramshorn snail, shell and all, when I dropped it into the tank because it was tangled up in the mop). Sometimes they will eat their fry, sometimes they won't. In one of my tanks I now have 7 fish. I started with 2. The other 5 are eggs that radomly hatched, and I let stay in the tank, and were never eaten.

Hello TAKO group,
Season's greetings! We hope this festive season finds you, your
family, and
your fish well and prosperous!
We will plan the next meeting for January. If somebody would like to
volunteer to host please contact me, if not, then the meeting will be
at
mine or Marty's house, again.
The only business to take care of is the date for the 2008 annual show.
The
show is to be hosted by the Dallas group. Kent Hunsuckle of the Dallas
group has proposed the weekend of July 12-13, 2008. This will miss the
Houston Dog show and July 4th weekend, so it should work for most of
us. If
you have a major conflict with the proposed date contact Kent at
kent@xolesfishies.com
Hatch those annuals now, so they will be ready for the July show. See
you
next month!
