Re: Ghost shrimp funk up anyone's tank?

    My ammonia was 0.5
    My nitrites were 1.0
    My nitrates were 40

I immediately went into panic mode and did the emergency water change.

Now that everything is back to normal, my ammonia is 0, my nitrites are 0, and my nitrates are at 60 (I just tested them).

    So, EK?  No hard feelings?

I quit feeding live food to my fish altogether.  Feeders are just so gross, and make my tanks look like crap

We've definitely cut down on how much and how often we feed live food, but they really seem to enjoy it so I can't stop altogether...I have spoiled fish.    And they run me.

Yeah, I feed feeder goldfish to my frogs, but they can pretty much live in mud and be OK LOL! I would definitely QT from now on though if you are worried about quality...Like MB said, you can gut-load them with goodies while you have them in de-tox too!! :P spoil your feeders and then sacrifice them to your real babies!!!   Hahahaha!! Good luck from now on though!!

Buy some good stock and breed your own feeder shrimp.

There is no hard feelings whatsoever....this is the internet.

I did not assume that your tank was dirty or you let fish float around dead....just brought to attention that that could be a reason since sometime in a big tank a fish or two could go missing unnoticed. Also the dirty water bit is the truth.....everyone has dirty water no matter how much they don't wanna admit it. Com'on now we cage the fish and they swim in their own poop.

I gave you lots of credit since everyone has something to learn from one another, reason why I asked questions or even bothered to join this discussion.

Now seeing your numbers I will say that you went through a mini-cycle which means that your bio-filtration was not up to speed to handle the load.

I will be at the meeting cause I love hanging out with all the members here so see you then!

                    On a side track note....

Why not make your own mix?

I feed my fronts this shrimp mix that makes them go nuts! They are worse then my trophs when it comes to feeding time! Water splashes everywhere and its sometimes scary cause one day I know they are gonna come flying out the tank!

Re: Ghost shrimp funk up anyone's tank?

I would love to know what you use to make your own mix, if you don't mind.  I've been mulling over making my own food, but figured it was a pretty large undertaking.  But since you suggested that it's something to consider, especially with the Fronts, I'd really like to know what your secret is.

Also, I get what you are saying about the dirty water.  But there are definitely levels to that.  I can tell by smell if my water is in need of some help.  I can also smell it the second I walk in the house if, God Forbid, I've lost a fish.  LOL  The big joke in my family is that I am happiest when armpit deep in fish poo water.  Cleaning the tanks/filters is like therapy for me.

Glad we are all good, and I sincerely look forward to meeting you Friday.
