tank setup problem.

    tank setup problem.

    So i got my 75 gallon tank up on it stand this morning, by myself, then proceeded to fill it up.  I got probably 30 gallons in it when I noticed a slop in the water.  The water in the left side of the tank is at about6.5-6.75" while the right side is a little over 6".

    I have had sloping water before and never really worried about it, but .5-.75" seems like a decent amount of slope.  Is it ok to keep filling it up.

    I would empty the tank out.. Do you have a level ?
    Find out if your floor is level
    Raise the stand with something to make it level (something that small and does not compress easy.. check with home depot on getting items to level out your stand.
    Then once this is done.. add water back in to the system

        No level at the store, but I can get one.

        Would cardboard work.  I have tons of cardboard box available.

          Wood is better, but cardboard will suffice. Just give it time to completely flatten out.

            I think I will try this, let me know if this sounds good.

            1)drain the tank so there is about 1-2" of water left in the middle of the tank.

            2)cut some cardboard and fit it under the stand until the sloping side is a little higher.

            3)fill tank 1/3-1/2 and let settle then measure each side to see where im at.  if still unlevel start over at 1.

              Yeah, just go a little overboard on the cardboard because of the "squish" factor.  Make sure you have total support under the stand with the shims to avoid creating undue stress on your tank.

                Remember that the cardboard will crush under weight but like CF said, it will do..  If you dont have a level -- get one -- borrow one -- take one from home bring it to work -- something..  If you dont have one at home.. get one from Home Depot...  You will stress a tank faster than anything else by having it off balance.

                  Well I built up some cardboard to make a long shim.  I stack sheets of cut boxes, each sheet shorter than the next to create a level resting place.  The shim was about 30".  but after taking a closer look, now there is a gap between where the shim stops and the right edge of the tank.  

                  I am starting to think this area will not work for a tank.  .5"-.75" may just be too much of an angle.

                    For a quick easy level, use a piece of 1/2" dia clear tubing longer than the tank is wide, tape one end to the top left corner + a few inches, one end to the top right corner + a few inches and fill it with water untill one end is full up to the top corner.  

                    I like to use a plywood or 2x4 base and shim it with the pre made wood shims for mounting door frames.  If the gap bothers you jus trim with a little piece of molding.

                      I dont mind the look of the gap at al.  This is not a show tank setup.  I was worried abou the stand breaking or sagging causeing a break or stress on the tank.

                        I made some modifications and then filled the tank up 1/3.  front to back is level, and side to side is between 1/16-1/8 off.  I am thinking this is about as close as I can get it.  I am wondering what yalls opinion is.  should i fill it all the way up or drain it and try to get the low end higher or even move the tank.  

                        I dont know if im am being a worry wart or if this is really that big of a deal.  I can honestly say that I have never done anything to level out my tanks desides checking for wobbles and never had a problem

                            Well here is what i got.  Every thing is level.  the only thing I dont like is having an electric outlet right behind the tank.  Good for convenience, but bad if the tank breaks or springs a leak.

                            Hopefully the tank will not be here too long.  Even though the odds of leaking are slim, i do not like the fact that there is a ton of electric stuff on the other side of the wall in the picture(mainly a small transformer that is on mounted on the floor for some reason. :(   If that gets wet I dont want to know what would happen.

                              Get a plastic bucket big enough to cover the transformer and then glue it upside down using something like elmers glue which you can later turn around and with a knife scape off if this concerns you to much.  This way if there is a leak the bucket will prevent water to get to it.
                              Cant think of anything else.
