  • Fish food comparison. Input needed please?

Hey everybody! I want yall's input, opinions & advice, please.

For a little while now I've been feeding an economic brand of food in addition to NLS flakes. I know its crap food & I would like to increase the overall nutritional value by replacing it with a better brand. I continue to use it because I only use it in addition to the NLS flakes & it does have some features that I do like. I'll be out within 2 weeks & don't want to buy it again unless I can't find anything better in time.

What I'm using right now is Wardley's Advanced Perfect Protein Cichlid Slow Sinking Crumbles. I like it because it sinks fast & it's perfectly sized for the fish I'm feeding it to.

I don't like it because Hartz is the parent company & they mostly make crappy-cheezeball-booty-bunk stuff... that said, here's the "Guaranteed Analysis":

    40% Crude Protein
    1.2% Arginine
    0.5% Histidine
    10% Crude Fat
    2% Crude Fiber
    10% Moisture
    200mg/kg Vitamin C

How crappy is this compared to what you use now?

Have you used the Wardley's Crumbles before & switched to something else that was comparable in size & speed of sinking but better in nutritional value? If so, what is it & how have you seen your fish benefit from it?

List the ingredients list as is on the label.

NLS pellets sink fast. So does Hikari Massivore and Ken's premium pellets. Right now I'm using Rapashy Meat Pie food (large tank) and microworm food (small tank) as a staple and then nls 4.5mm (large tank) and nls .5mm (small tank) to add some variety. I also feed catfish pellets to both.

I have 6mm NLS pellets that I feed in another tank & they don't sink worth a flip. Somedays the overflow eats more than the fish. I'm looking for something that sinks as soon as it hits the water in the same size as the crumbles.

Although, it would be nice to find something that sinks faster for the big guys, too. One of my O's has an air bubble right now. :( Tried to feed him peas for nearly an hour but he ain't having any of it. Spits them out after a few minutes.

see how there's not much "real" ingredients? The ingredients list is in order of amount in the product and reading this one there is "fish meal" and then a whole bunch of fillers. The main ingredient itself is not the greatest and would be considered a filler compared to other foods.

if you are feeding by hand then find yourself a cup to stir it up in first or throw the pellets near the output nozzle.

I never believed this was caused by ingesting from the water surface but hit them with some epsom salt (1tbsp/5g) and some Salt(sodium chloride) to help with the swimbladder issue.

+1 for stirring it in a cup or putting near an output. It sinks before it hits my overflow

I was sure it was full of fillers; it's a Hartz product, it sucks & I totally agree. That's the main reason I'm trying to find something with the same properties but more actual nutritional value other than just fillers.

I hit the tank with Rock Salt earlier today, it was all I had handy. No improvement, but not sure how long he's been that way. I've been out of town since Friday morning. He's still upright, but fighting to stay that way. Poor baby looks like he swallowed a golf ball.

I change what I feed my fish. I go from the best food to the cheepest food. a new can will last about a month. If funny that they like the cheep food best and turn their nose up at the better foods. The cheep food is like candy to them. Its not as good for them but they eat it up. I do give treats like live shrimp, brine shimp, and worms...
Hope you O, gets better Dawn...

do you need some epsom salt? I can bring some over. Worked great for my tank the other day. The fatties in my tank like to pick at the floaters which is why they swallow a lot of air sometimes.

I feed them cobalt aquatics flake, omega one pellets, Hikari brine shrimp, and pea.

Kyan, if you want to leave me some when you come get the rocks I'd appreciate it. I'm about to leave to go to the MTS lady's house.

The O is still kickin this morning, thank goodness. Doesn't seem any worse but doesn't seem better either.

Troy, I also feed treats as well (shrimp, etc.), I'd just like to have something with a better nutritional value for the 2 tanks I use this stuff in on a daily basis.

Omega one pellet sink pretty fast imo. I'll put some in the zip lock I bought a pack and probably won't be finishing it anytime soon. Had to put "this is not salt" (in Vietnamese) so my dad won't put random thing in his food, he eats a lot of salt.

just fast him for several days he'll be okay. I've been feeding my fish with pea for the last 3 days I'll go back to normal diet now that they are clean.
