  • Where to find a very large boiler?

I have a large piece of driftwood that I'd like to put in my 100.  Actually it's in there now, but somehow the aquascape isn't quite what I had in mind as its floating at the top, only submerged at by the crosspiece in the middle of the top of the tank.

I pressure blasted it last weekend, but don't really have anything big or deep enough to boil it.  I'm thinking that boiling it would help disinfect it (just in case) and the heat from boiling would cause any air in it to expand, release, and then contract when it cools down - to the point where I can simply use some slate if it doesnt readily sink.  Right now I think I would have to fasten about 25 or 30lbs to it to sink it.

So if anyone out there has a large boiler I could beg, borrow, or rent it would be greatly appreciated.  The wood is about 3.5' long, 14-16" tall at it's highest point.

    The other option...
Ideas welcome on aquascaping with a floating log  :).  I think getting light to the plants would be the hardest thing about that tho.  I've yet to find bright underwater plant lighting and sunglasses for fish.

I think Wal-Mart sells crawfish boilers for pretty cheap.

You are better off just adding a piece of slate on the bottom and that way make it sink

Even after boiling it, it will still more likely float.  Tie it off to some slate with fishing wire.

I haven't seen any 42" turkey or crqwfish potss.   You will have to make do with a steel 55g drum and a propane cooker.

The slate doesn't have to be that heavy, it just has to stick out so that you can cover the slate with enough gravel to hold it down.

He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

If I had a drum and cooker, I'd sure do it.

I have a couple of 6lb diving weights that I can use pretty easily.  I'd like to paint/coat or otherwise encase them since they're solid lead.  I don't know what I can use that will stick to lead though.  I can trial and error on some smaller weights, but the cure time i'm sure will be a while I would think.  I will have to seek out some sort of epoxy.

My 2 synodontis ocellifers seem to like it floating.  They swim all around it, up and over the dips and through the crevices in it.  The little guy kinda had me scared when I got home today - I didn't find him at first because he was tucked deep in a hole.  I was afraid he might have jumped out of the tank.  The big guy (6-7" or so)  doesn't fit in the crevices, but seems to enjoy going over the top and ending up at the filter outlet where there's some current.  Ive seen more action the last 24 hours out of those guys then I have since I've had them - they were lazy bums in their last tank.

I have some large pieces of slate in various sizes that you can have it you would like them.  My Petricolas used to love a piece that I had that had branches going to the top of the tank.  I guess if gave them a sense of security at the top of the tank.

Boiling the wood won't stop it from floating but we use large pots and put out stone and wood in the tub and fill it with boiling water. Lots of pots

We weight the wood down by putting the ends in pieces of holy rock.
