  • Emporer 400 making alot of noise

my E400 just started making some horrible noise, that is so load I had to unplug it this morning.  I thought maybe it was just dirty, so I took it off the tank and cleaned the area where the propeller sits but that didnt help at all.

I am thinking it may need a new prop, any suggestions?

Do you have sand for substrate? It could have sucked up some sand and worn down the magnet causing the impeller to wobble some.

yes, i do have sand.  I figured that is what was causing it.  Is there a way to fix it or will I just need to replace it?

Replace it and raise your intake pipe after that.

I had it low to get some water movement on the lower level of the tank, but i forgot about the sand.  Guess I will have to figure out another way to move the lower level water.

Powerhead... That's what I use in one of my frog tanks to keep it moving and it works great!

i think im gonna reroute my wet/dry return pipe to go lower in the tank.  I think putting a powerhead near the sand would put me in the same predicament that im in now, but a sponge on the powerhead could work.

Emperor's are my favorite HOB, did you know you can take the impeller out of the reservoir box and clean it completely?

You simply pull up on the two spray bar housing hubs, and pull the entire impeller section out for cleaning. Then the impeller itself can be removed by carefully popping the impeller housing off....there are two small tabs on each side of the housing that will release the impeller ....

Now that I think about it, i may not have an emporer.  I remember my old emporer had the spray bar, but this one does not.  I think I may have penquin, which would explain why it is not as reliable as my old emporer

Re: Emporer 400 making alot of noise

I would clean it as best you can, and in time slime may build around it and make it a little more quiet.

If you cannot handle that noise, and you have cleaned the impeller, the shaft, and the well where the impeller and shaft goes..then there is no choice but to go or call around to pet stores and find out who has a replacement impeller and shaft assembly on the shelf.

                    Sand is a pain sometimes..

Re: Emporer 400 making alot of noise

I had just as many problems with my Emperor as I did with the Marinelands when I had sand substrate.  New impeller is going to run you about $12 if it's Marineland and about $20ish for the Emperor.  You can find them at some LFS's but it's easier if you just order it from the web.

You can take the impeller shaft out by removing the end bushings.  Check to see if the shaft is scored, that's causing your noise if it is.

is there any kind of lubricant that can be put on the impellar without harming the water.

vegetable oil I think...or olive oil...a very small amount.  I think I remember someone telling me that would work without harming anything.
