  • Protein skimmer

sorry guys my first time, can anyone answer my stupid question, I should say novice, if I can use to set up a three hundred gallon tank with skimmer for tropheus and petrochromis tanks.

Thank you all for the replies, my brother had a salt water back in New York and he took his down but still had the skimmer and pump, he offered me to take it and I did. I am trying to set up a 300 plus aquarium and thinking that its a good thing and it ll help my aquarium. It's a project for me, it'll take time I know but just curious to see if this expensive equipment would work with FW.

i know it's for SW but he spent a lot of money on the stuff and gave to me so I do want to know if its worth the time and effort to have it set up in the FW tank.
thanks guys I'll wait for you guys to reply.
once again thanks to all of you.

Curious to know, why would you set up a skimmer for a fw tank? Of course it does help with filtration, but is there any other reason? Most fw fish can survive with protein being in the water. Or are you talking about a wet/dry filter?

For the skimmer to work you would need a constant top off and a very large waste container or plumbed outside as well as some serious plumbing, though doable its not very pratical

Protein Skimmers are designed for SW and does not work for FW, the foam created by the micro bubbles don't last long in freshwater and that make it useless.

can anyone answer my stupid question
The only stupid question is one you don't ask.

Take a picture of the tank and everything you have for it. post the pictures and some will tell you what you have and how it works...

              I have a feeling he's talking about setting up a wet/dry filter.

Surface skimmer, yes absolutely, can't hurt. Protein skimmer, there really isn't any point, fresh water doesn't 'foam' like saltwater, I'm sure some shops will sell you a couple hundred bucks worth of equipment, however you would be completely wasting your money.

                  +1 troy
There are no stupid questions, only people with no patience to answer them... A stupid question would be like me going to fish gallery and asking for live sand for a fresh water aquarium.... The guy first looked confused, then looked tempted to scam me, then looked upset when he asked his colleagues if they had any... Obviously expecting a good laugh with his co-worker, only for his friend to sell him out and tell me there's no such thing!
