  • Please check my fish combination/setup.

planted 45G (tall) with hc and vallesnaria
Here's a list of fishies I've bought from city pets and fish ranch II. Does anyone see a problem with the combination?

    1 Galaxy Rasbora (Celestichthys margaritatus)
1 German Blue Ram (Microgeophagus ramirezi)
    1 "plant pleco"
    2 "algea eating shrimp"
2 Bumblee Bee Goby (Brachygobius xanthozona )
    3 Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi)
    3 rasbora espei
    3 Penguin Tetra (Thayeria boehlkei)
    3 Gold White Clouds
3 Red Neon Zebra (cant find any info on these??) <--- from city pets at 3.99 each

As far as i know the are all schooling (except the ram). I got everything on a LFS splurge, so i didnt really research anythign. I've always kept cichlids, but wanted to go schooling in my planted tank. TIA!

Also, i need more galaxy rasboras! anyone know where i can get some this weekend?

Sounds fine to me...Maybe the pleco might become problematic since you say you have HC planted... Got any pictures?

As for the Galaxy Rasboras they have been reclassified as Celestial Pearl Danios and I have not seen any available for quite some time now.

Your "plant Pleco" is a Otocinclus affinus - also known as an Otto.  I bought some from City Pets and they work well getting rid of the algae off the plants and windows..  You will want to get a few more - I would get two more at least - they are are hard workers - but they get full easy and when they are not hungry they will just sit there..  If you have problems with Algae in the tank I would look into getting a couple (2) Bristle nose Pleco's as they will not grow huge in your tank and will do a good job at cleaning too..

Personally I would get another 3 German Rams, but over all I like what I am reading...

I would love to see pictures of the setup. If the "algae eating shrimp" you got are from City Pets, then chances are that they are Amano Shrimp (Caridina Japonica).

I don't see any problems with the fish listed above. Good luck!

Re: Please check my fish combination/setup.

oh yea.. I got a 1 Redline Shark  (Puntius denisonii) from xtreme fish today (trung is awesome) and 3 jellybean tetras from FG.

alright... this is the definition of "work in progress"!

Its a 45g from the 1$ a gallon Petco sale.
1 bag of eco-complete plant mixed with 1 bag of black flourite and 1 bag of black flourite sand on top.
3 pots of HC in foreground.

            things i'm still working on:
the wall where the tank will live. I had to rip down some wood paneling and put up sheetrock. (thats why tank is only half full. I still need to move the thing!)

make 2 side panels and 2 doors for the stand.

            paint the back glass black.

            build a canopy!
those are 2 48" GE Plant & Aquarium bulbs in a shoplight balast! $20 total!!

Don't get a bristlenose if you are truly trying to grow that HC.....also the lighting needs a little more uMPH to keep it a foreground plant.

                more uMph?
                2 bulbs at 40watts each = 80watts, which i thought was about right for a 45g.
regardless, its just temp until i build a canopy and save up for some lighting.

I appreciate the info, thou! thanks

With the shoplights you lose about half due to poor reflectors and then there's the height of the tank....HC loves a lot of light and lots of co2.

So i painted the back glass black, and got the thing moved to its home. Moving that thing across a room was not fun!!

A few more things before i can fill it up, thou.

-- any recommendations on where to plant the java fern? center or right side?

                    - how should i clean the water stains on the glass? just fill it up and scrub with a tank brush? can glass get damaged from those spots?

1 German Blue Ram (Microgeophagus ramirezi)
-this looks like a Bolivian Ram to me...
                      1 "plant pleco"
                      2 "algea eating shrimp"
2 Bumblee Bee Goby (Brachygobius xanthozona )
-might want to get some more info on which ones you got, as most info out there says they are brackish fish.

                      All these:
                      3 Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi)
                      3 rasbora espei
                      3 Penguin Tetra (Thayeria boehlkei)
                      3 Gold White Clouds
                      3 Red Neon Zebra

are schooling fish, like you said. Technically, they'll do much better in larger numbers.

The "red neon zebras" are most likely some kind of zebra danio, not sure if they're GloFish or not. But regardless, they're probably Danio rerio.

The Puntius denisonii might get a bit aggressive as a lone fish. Barbs tend to do this when not kept in groups to keep everyone in check. You also might need to watch out for your little fish as this one grows up.

The java fern will do wonderfully on the driftwood you have in there.

As for the water spots, are they on the inside or the outside? If on the inside, it will be a bit more difficult as razor blades work the best but the deposits will fall into your tank, might be a pain to clean out. I normally just scrape the glass with razor blades after wetting it a bit, either with water or vinegar/water. Again, it's a little different if this is in the inside of the tank, though.

the java fern is the big plant floating in the last pic. I should attach it to the wood vs planting it?

the water stains are on the inside from the current spash.

NO these are brackish, they will live for a while but will get fungus or die mysteriously.

I see a problem waiting to happen. If you don't make the schooles bigger i predict fish death from "lonlyness" related stress. If you do get more i predict death from over stocking.

I would divide this project into two projects. One American tank and one Asian Tank.

Yes. It won't do too well if planted. Just use some cotton thread or fishing line to attach it to the driftwood.

See what you can do with just an aquarium sponge/scraper/brush for the water spots, since the tank is half full and has fish.
