HC does a lot better with adequate co2 and even additional doses of Seachem Flourish Excel will help, though not sure how the vals and such will react to it.
Just a thought - are those Rotalas in the background? You might want to pull them up and cut the leafless stems off, leaving about an inch or 2 of stem below the leaves. That way you won't have bare stems, and after they grow a bit they will look much fuller.
And yes, the CO2 will help a lot. :) I'm pretty sure the Vals will do fine with Excel. They're not very picky and seem to do well regardless.
If you decide to shed those bumblebee gobies (since they're really a brackish fish), let me know - I've got a brackish 50 that they'd look great in :)
Your setup looks nice - but like everyone says - schoolers require at least 7-10 to be somewhat content. Plus you'll really get to see they're true behaviour and personality. I noticed a big difference when I went from keeping 3-4 cory cats to putting 6-7 in a tank. They really took on a personality then!
Here's a suggestion to get more brightness out of the shoplights... Lowes (and probably home depot) have some metallic looking vinyl contact paper. It's down the shelving aisle, where wire baskets and such are. Use that to line the inner light housing. Even better would be to get a roll of aluminum flashing in the roofing department, and polish it (start with #2 steel wool, and work down to #0000 (or if you have an electric polisher, that would be perfect). Line the inner housing with that. Flashing is fairly easy to shape because it's thin. I used the contact paper on a 10 gallon standard hood. In a few weeks I'll check the adhesion. It didn't make a huge difference since it's on an 18 gallon tank (19tall, same footprint as a standard 10 gallon), so I"ll probably do others with the flashing.
The ultimate oxymoron - Narcolepsy and ADHD. Who says you can`t have it all??!!
