there is much to do in preparation for my anticipated new arrival, a young fahaka puffer who will be moving into my 125g. the big tank is full of driftwood (sale pending ), live plants (sale pending ), bamboo shrimp (sold- pickup pending ), angelfish, corys, a rainbow shark, and the sole survivor of sunkenmetal's red-claw macro shrimp. the substrate is already sand, so that's a bonus. i'll keep a branch or two of the manzanita, and probably a few plants, swords and crypts. i have lots of big round stones to scape with, and the thriving MTS population should be a good thing too. the corys are pending sale already, the angels can go back to the LFS they came from. the rainbow shark can go with the angels, and the red-claw macro can be moved to my 29g. and that is what i've been working on today, my 29g. :) i completely gutted it.
this is what it looked like this morning-
and this is what it looks like now-
i'm impatient, the water is still cloudy, but i love the way it looks now! no more bikini bottom, sorry dawn! :) i pulled the blue gravel and replaced it with black sand from the 10g that has been sitting half-way full with no filtration, no heater, and a film over the surface of the water for at least 2 months.. imagine my surprise when along with a scoop of sand i pull out a very angry 3" bulldog pleco! i had no idea he was in there! it goes to show how sturdy they really are. he's happy in the 29g now. i had to add more natural sand in with the black to get the depth i needed, and added 2 nice manzanita pieces and some round river stones. a coconut shell makes a great cave, and tasted great besides! a madagascar lace plant in the center, a large crypt and a melon sword are the only plants for now, but i'll try to add more. i'm hesitant to plant heavily due to the occupants, however. my fire eel is just over a foot long now, and i moved him to this tank a few weeks ago. this is why i first considered changing up the decor, as the regular gravel isn't preferable for spiny eels due to their habit of burying themselves. with him are 3 bumblebee catfish, a dwarf frog, all my apple snails, and a group (approx 15) of my baby geos from petco! everyone seems to be getting along quite nicely.. and i'll probably move the corys in tomorrow as a temporary home until they get picked up. i will try to get better pics as soon as it clears fully! i have to admit, i have let most of my tanks go pretty badly the past few months. i haven't seen any ill effects on health, and haven't suffered any losses, but they just aren't LOOKING good any more. so it feels really good to be changing things around and sprucing up a bit.. i needed this, and i think my fishie friends did too. thank you, HFB. :)
