well the rainbow shark is still doing well.. i think the tank is big enough (6') and well planted/decorated.. he has lots of room to get away.

i've noticed a really cool thing he does!!! (by the way, madugo, do you know the sex of the fish? or is there any way to tell?) kiff will orient him/herself vertically, perpendicular to the sand, and blow small jets of water at the sand itself to gently sort of "dig", then examine the shallow pit he just created. :) i'm thinking he is hunting baby MTS. also, he's not alone! the rainbow shark will often be right next to him, eagerly nibbling at the cloud of particles kiff stirs up. this does not seem to bother the "aggressive" puffer in the slightest, either! he doesn't seem to care. :)

Suki does the same thing...blowing at the sand. It's definitely hunting. And super cute.
And glad to hear the shark is still okay, every puffer is different...you just have to try tankmates and see what happens. May decide to eat them after a day, a week, or never.
And no, no way to tell sex aside from autopsy. Sometimes a female will lay eggs in captivity, but just because it doesn't, doesn't mean it's a dude.

awesome! :) thank you! i call mine kiff after the character from futurama, so i guess it's ok either way since he's not exactly a macho man. as far as the shark, i think he's ok simply because both fish are of similar temperament, and are also almost exactly the same size (at least in length, at least for now). add to the equation lots of plants and manzanita branches... it should last a while at least. :) we shall see.

Exactly! You just pretty much pick a sex and stick with it, try friends and see if they're food...
I went with female for Suki, because even though I might not be right, there is 0% chance I will ever be proven wrong!

Good to see you going with plants, too- another thing you'll hear you "can't" do with a fahaka...it really just depends on the fahaka. Ours does well for the most part, she bites at the plants and tears stuff up when she's pouting/thinking I'm starving her to death. She always makes sure I'm watching her when she does it, too. Lmao... Little turd. Other than that, she's great with plants, though.

lol the tank was originally set up for a group of w/c texas cichlids given to me by a friend, then planted for angels, corys, tetras, and plecos. in reality, i just still liked the way it looked, so i pretty much just left it the way it was, and kiffie seems to love it!
