For me, a wet dry is the first filtration option I like to seek out. I like it most because the water is constantly going from being submerged to hitting air. Good bio. Canisters have the potential to raise nitrates

          I would go Wet/Dry. If I could only do one. But I would use 2 canister. If I don't have a wet/dry.

Thanks everyone! I'm lucky enough to have the problem of "extra" equipment laying around when it comes to set ups and I sometimes catch myself thinking what of all this stuff should I use this time. This is a great place to get input from others to help me with my decisions.

            Thank you very much.

What kind of canister and wet dry do you have, if you don't mind sharing?

                Re: Wet Dry or Eheim

Wet dry is my go to filter. It's so handy! It's dead silent if you set it up right. You get more volume. A dosing chamber. You can shove your heaters down there. Large bio load. More oxygenation. Surface skimmer.

But if I could have both, I wouldn't hesitate to put both to use.

Moganman, I have a couple 2217s and a eheim ecco. There are a couple old Hagen canister filters around here somewhere but I prefer eheim. The wet dry I have is the big PM 30 x 16 model. Kinda wish I would have kept the 2 2260's I sold last year.

                    Somebody is happy you didn't.
What return pump do you have for the wet/dry?

Troy, I have a couple different sized iwaki pumps as well as little giant pumps and a silent one pump. They are all external. I also have an old mag pump around here somewhere if I can find it. For this location I would probably want to use an internal pump.

I think I'm just going to fill the tank with water and install the wet dry and run it to see how much noise goes into the room. If it bothers me, I'll just go the canister only route. The tank is Reef Ready so the switch out is easy. I'll just pipe the eheim into the overflow box. If I do that I'll plumb a diy top off system just to my overflow box to make sure the eheim never runs dry due to evaporation.
