  • Please ID this German or Bolivian Ram...

I bought this at City Pets for 10dolla! It was labeled as a "german blue ram", but someone mentioned that it looked like a Bolivian.

Any ideas? Also, is it a male or female? I want to get it a mate..

    Thanks!

From Aussie_Hippy_2 on another board....I give credit where credit is due.  :-)  If this person is right, then you've got a female.

"Sexing: First things first, an immature giggle. OK done. But seriously, the best way in my opinion to sex your Bolivians is to look at the tail fin. The top of the males caudal (tail) fin should have a much longer extension then the females. The first and second ray of the dorsal fin; if the second ray petrudes much further then the third and forth, then chances are it's a male. This however is not the best way; use the tail first, and dorsal fin for confirmation. These aren't the easiest fish to sex, so you'll probably be best just getting a few and waiting for them to pair. "

Now I have to check mine and try and sex them (immature giggle).

that is a female....the males have longer dorsal fins that flow nicely in the water as they swim.....nice fish by the way.....

Hard to tell by the pictures since it does not show either dorsal nor tail fins and obviously looks a bit stressed from being transported.

You can see the dorsal but not the tail fin. But since you can just go look at it you can probably tell if it's a male or female based on the advice given. You can get a match for it at Fish Ranch II. They have quite a few. I got some a couple weeks ago.

Re: Please ID this German or Bolivian Ram...

So i went to citypets and got what i think is a male. I dropped him in, and they quickly found eachother.
There was a lot of eratic swimming at first. Then they were like mirror images of eachother. And at one point, they swam straight towards eachother and locked jaws and spun around while connected.

Is this mating dance, or do i have 2 of the same gender fighting?
