  • 3-gallon near-disaster

My son's well-intentioned Kindergarten teacher requested a small aquarium for her classroom (smaller is easier, right?), and a parent bought her a Marineland 3 gallon eclipse kit. I was eventually recruited to set it up. It's been running for about two weeks now, stocked with some juvie blueberry shrimp and three small male guppies, some plastic plants, and a moss ball. I used a prefilter sponge on it that had been on my Edge for the last six months, so I wasn't too worried about cycling it.

I noticed after just a few days that the flow on the filter had really slowed down, but I figured the sponge was becoming too clogged, and I didn't really worry about it. I figured it was best to not mess with that sponge for the time being.

This afternoon I walked in and noticed the fish spending a lot of time at the surface, and the filter was making noises but not pumping at all. I removed the media and the prefilter, and checked the impeller, but it's simply not working anymore. It's just making noise and heat. I didn't have enough time to run to a fish store before the school closed, so I brought everything home. They're about to end up in my 10-gallon QT.

I also got some items from Bob's Tropical Plants today, so I guess they have to go in there, too.

I wonder if those guppies would have been dead by morning.

Since spring break is next week, I'll have these guys in this 10 gallon QT all next week. All I have on it is a sponge filter. It's not cycled, but I have plenty of prime and seachem stability. I guess it will be fine, but I'm thinking about picking up an AQ20 so I can put that prefilter on it. Do I need to?

Long term I think this 10 gallon tank will go back to the school, so maybe a HOB would be a good idea anyway. I'm done with that 3-gallon tank.

Tiny Nanos are tough all the way around. I'd never recommend them for anyone other then dedicated aquarists as even I have learned to dread their upkeep. A sponge should be fine and an aquaclear is always a great HOB in any case. We have one on nearly all our tanks and even season them just in case we need another preseasoned.

Funny thing is (well, not so funny) we had two UPS packages stolen from our porch this afternoon. I'm lucky my fish arrived after the jacka5s ran off with my Amazon stuff.
