  • GNATs

Hey do yall have a problem with gnats hatchin out and being all over the inside of your tank lids?  I keep my lids fairly clean but i notice that I have tons of dead gnats on the window seal behind one of my tanks, and on my others i find gnats in some window seals around them.  i have tried like hell to figure out how to get rid of them and they still appear.  do yall have this problem??

I have really aggressive surface agitation so whatever makes it in there usually gets filtered through or the fish eat it.

how do you get really aggressive surfice aggitation?  mine is pretty good. i have airstones in all my tanks and the hang on the backs mix it up good.  what else do you do?

        Re: GNATs

There are multiple ways, but i wouldn't really consider an air stone to cause aggressive surface agitation. You could put a power head in there and mount it closer to the top of the tank. Or, if you're in the market for a new HOB filter you could put an Aquaclear on there which always provide good surface agitation.

            Re: GNATs

i have an aquaclear on all my tanks.  and big air stones the long bar ones.  they move the surface like nobodys business. they are very aggressive to the surface.  what do yall do when you feed with the powerheads though.  i had a powerhead at the surface for awhile.  but the gnats where still there and feeding was impossible unless i unpluged it.

              Re: GNATs

Well gnats come from decaying fruits or plants right? I don't eat much fruit, what I do eat I like cold and plants stay outside.

is your water topped off all the way? like all the way above the bottom of the trim? that will produce a little more agitation.

my fruit fry cultures get loose some times and take over my microworm cutures.
I use the sticky roll of fly paper available at most dolar stores.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'
