I know, I know...but I am running the Home for Wayward Fish. Here's a fish that we really thought was going to die. He was horribly beat up and pretty much blind. After rounds of antibiotics, he's doing so much better. Here's a pic. Now what the heck is he??? He's about 7-8 inches.

Re: Need another fish ID
Oh Loretta, you should have seen him when he got here. Both eyes were totally clouded over, his tailfin was chewed up, he was missing so many scales. It was just so sad. I'm on a mission to ID this fish. Our Fishhouse

Re: Need another fish ID
I am thinking you are right on with that ID...
English name : Narrow Hatchfish or Dusky narrow hatchetfish
It writes that 6.5in is the max length.. There isnt much information about them that is true... since I can read Danish I am noticing a few pieces of information about the fish in Danish. Its not imported much as its cousin the "Giant Hatchetfish" is more popular and only reaches about 2.5in in length.
Pretty much a VERY rare fish to have as you will prolly have to look far and wide to find more of them.
They thrive best with access to live food. They do eat other smaller fish so be careful about who its tank mates are. They lists that it will when grown (slow grower) will eat fish the size of a Neon Tetra.
The only book that shows it might have some information is : 500 Freshwater Aquarium Fish: A Visual Reference to the Most Popular Species

Re: Need another fish ID
Cool! Thank you for the information! He's in a tank with other fish around his size, some of which are live food eaters so he has access to rosey reds when he's ready. So far I haven't seen him go after any, but he may still be getting back to his full health. He's nibbled on some pellets, so that's a good start. I really wonder where he came from? I mean, I know my cousin bought a tank from a woman and all the fish came with it. This was one of them. But I'm now wondering how she got a hold of him.Our Fishhouse

Re: Need another fish ID
From everything I can find about them is that they periodically are imported, but since there is not much desire for them because they require a bigger tank (min 55gal) You may want to ask Charles at FR-II and see if he knows if any of his sources can get some in. They will school :)
As I said earlier they are closely related to the hatchet family of fish but all its cousins are much smaller 2-3in in size when they are fully grown :)
** note I updated the previous post with more information **

Re: Need another fish ID
Very cool! I thought the same thing, it was some kind of hatchet fish that was probably around 2 inches. 7-8 inches, wow!
For future IDs, a helpful hint is that your guy has an adipose fin, which is characteristic of all characins (tetras and the like)."Millennium hand and shrimp!"
