Where does your friend live? If it's Texas, all Potamotrygons are illegal, and that means pretty much all FW stingrays.

I believe there is only one FW atringray that is allowed in Texas.
You will neeed to check with fish & wildlife to find out which one.

Trygon garrapa, or something like that. That's the only one I've seen that isn't a Potamotrygon.  :(

Looks like the Florida Stingray will be your safest bet on a LEGAL species.

Why are stingrays illegal anyway?  I understand whypirahna are illegal but whats the deal with stingrays.

I don't think Texas wants its waterways clogged with poison-barbed bottom-dwellers. The majority of keepers would be responsible, but you know there will be a few who buy 'em, then let 'em go when they realize they've outgrown their 20 gallon aquarium.

I didnt realize thefreshwater had the poisonous barbs.  Even so, Most people say that animal like that or pirahna would not have a very good chance of surviving.
