  • Column tank vs hex tank vs bow front small tank

Picked up a few things from Tim today.

While there I looked at his shrimp and think I'm going to give it a try.

I have been nosing around looking at a few different shapes of tanks.

Pets Mart has a Aqueon 15 gallon column tank thats 22.5" high.

What's a general opinion on the best tank shape other than a standard 10 gallon rectangle.

Any shape you like. It shouldn't matter much. They tend to do much better in tanks with plants as there's more food (infusoria and other micro organisms) along with cover. They also feed on detritus, bio film and decaying plant matter, so a well established tank would work best.

Rectangular shaped tanks are much easier to scape IMO.

+1.. Rect tank is more practical.

I have a flat hex tank.. and it looks good and modern.. but it is not really practical when trying to clean them.
I have the patience of a goldfish....

Yes different shaped tanks are cool and very appealing to the eye, but some may be more difficult to clean and maintenance as a result. For the shrimps i think the column would be cool a backing for them to climb and tall plants. For shimps i think they like a backing to climb and pick foods off of.

          I agree.

Someone posted pictures of a tall hex tank i think it was several months back. i remember thinking how cool it looked. There was a lot of shrimp and manzanita wood. Kind of thinking something along those lines on a smaller scale.

They like any plants lol. I've noticed they love bushy plants more than tall leafy plants. That's why when you get shrimp shipped to you, there's usually moss in there with them to cling onto. Also, if you have fish in there, the shrimps tend to act differently and like to hide in the bushy plants.

I vote a shrimp only tank! It's pretty amazing how they act when there's no predators.

I saw that tank! Looks good indeed, but the taller the tank, the stronger your lights need to be. What size tank are you looking to get?

up to 15 or 20 gallons max as I mentioned in my opening.

I need to stop by Pet's Mart to see if they stock the 15 gallon column tank.

I'd probably upgrade the filter and light if the options are there.

Stopped by Pets Mart and looked at the 15 gallon column tank.

I see a lot of potential for a counter top shrimp and invert tank.
