How about triops, they're small and freaky-looking. You could grab some from a hobby center or a place with an extensive science section.

Adding a simple 9w PC wouldn't be too hard for that tank.....I just did a 70w over a ~5g, was not as limited with a hood but again it's 70w MH.

There is usually a good selection at   AQUABID
or you can come to the Houston international Betta Show & Auction in the spring.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

:( That's what my Mustard Gas male looked like...except he had REALLY nice straight rays and he was a double ray...I went through so much trouble to get him and I could never get him to breed...stupid fish... I picked up a CT male and female pair at the Petco in Atascocita(sp?) and he's pretty nice looking... I had to sort through a lot of crappy looking ones before I found him, but he's cute, so it was worth it! He really likes to flare too!!

Haha.  Not my intention.  I'd take pictures, but... wow, that's gonna be challenging.  Maybe another time.

So I ended up at Fish Gallery (funny how that happens) and scooped up 3 of the dwarf corydoras catfish.  They're now happily (I hope) inhabiting the bottom of the 1.5 gal hex.  They're so tiny and good at hiding that I can't really get a picture of them right now, but I'll try in the future.

As far as the ballast, I'll get a pic of it later too.  Generally it's just a plastic canopy with a ballast on one side and a bulb w/ reflective shield on the other.  My concern with getting a PC bulb is that the ballast is 15 watt, 120 volt.  I'm not sure if I can find one to fit those specifics.

Actually, there are a ton of compact fluorescent screw-ins out there that are 15W. You can find one at pretty much any store (CVS, grocery store, Walmart, Lowes, etc.). I don't think you'll have a problem finding one.  8)

hey if i can find it, i can tell you for the bulbs.  i think petsmart or evan walmart has them.  my dad turned a couple of 1.5 hex tanks into a little greenhouse thing.  cant think of the term, but one of those were the lid is on and water is poored on ur dirt and you let the water condense on the lid and rain down again on it.  wel my point is, he used his to grow starter plugs or tangerines, lemons, limes, and stuff like that.  was pretty cool

I picked a round Sylvania 30 watt circline bulb that has an adapter so it screws into a regular socket.  I plan to make a lid/canopy for a little hex tank I have with it.  It's 8.5" in diameter and I got it at (of all places) HEB.  Would have been cheaper at Lowes or Walmart, but not after the gas to get to either of those, and they way I can never walk into either of those places and just get one item....

Oh, neat! Be sure to start a thread on that, Spot. Pictures and all, if you can. Before I got my MH pendant on my 30hex, I was toying with the idea of using circlines, thanks to a member on here that pointed me in that direction. I'd be interested to see how it works out!
