  • Ohh nooo!

This morning I was welcomed by dead fish, ALL of them. I have no idea what happened. My fish were healthy, they ate good, active, all the things we like in our fish, they were. Everything in the tank seemed normal last night. What happened? Any input is appreciated.

What kind of fish? What size tank? Are your heater and filtration still going?

I'm so sorry to hear this. :( We'll try to figure out what happened.

Any info? Kind of hard to give input with no information other than the tank seemed normal. How long has your tank been set up? Water parameters? Livestock list? Tank size? Filtration? Substrate?

              I add/change 20% about every 6weeks.

I would test ammonia and nitrate

For me 20% every 6 Weeks is too little , specially with catfish and large plecos

By this do you mean you bought a new filter or did you clean it?

Possible. There is a large common pleco in there and they create a ton of waste. We won't know for sure until or if he gets some water parameters.

I wouldn't be so quick to jump to conclusions. Surprisingly enough, I've seen tanks go years without water changes, but the fish were healthy. I do agree that 20% every 6 weeks isn't enough.

Crw, I would start doing 50% water changes every week with dechlotinator if possible. That'll ensure your water quality is good.

Did you check your aerator? Lackluster filtration and low water changes would kill the fish, but you would not see multiple species die in one night, especially a Pleco. My opinion...

I agree. Nitrate toxicity kills slowly. The fish would've shown signs of distress and would've stopped eating prior to dying. However if one fish died in there and started releasing copious amounts of ammonia/nitrate into the water, that may have done it if the filter was overwhelmed.

                              Hard to tell.
