Wow, you don't hear of them going bad too often.
I'd recommend getting a ViaAqua titanium heater which comes with a controller. When they fail, it goes into the off position so you won't have a overheat situation. My main tanks have them exclusively. This is to tree best if my recollection, please correct me if I'm wrong.

The Finnex Titanium heaters are also a very trustworthy brand. They go up to 500w I believe and they also have the electronic thermometer controller for about the same price as the regular thermometer controller. I'm buying a Finnex one within the month. If I like it, I'll swap all my heaters over to it.
