Re: Question about Giraffe Cat behavior

Thanks.  Ya, I am planning to move some of the rock.  I am planning to get a big cylinder shaped piece of driftwood for that area.

BTW, do you think if I were to move it tonight it would help with some of these problems.

Re: Question about Giraffe Cat behavior

I don't think it could hurt. I would move the rock, maybe upright or something and feed then see what happens. Just a thought.

Re: Question about Giraffe Cat behavior

We use a lot of slate in the tanks with the cats.  The Fronts like it too.  These aren't great pics since I was getting a lot of reflection from the other tanks, but I was in a hurry.  :)  But you can see how they both have taken over a 'cave' area.

They are in separate tanks, by the way.

Hoover, the 23" giraffe cat.  We actually bought a larger tank just for him.  Spoiled brat....

And Junior, he's about 14" right now, but was about 10" when he came to live with us and that was only a couple of months ago....

He also moves all the sand away from his area and every so often we have to go in and straighten it all back out.

Also, Junior breathes pretty heavy sometimes, like your cat.  He's a little more nervous than Hoover is, but Hoover's been around a lot longer so hoping the nervousness goes away with time.  I figure he'll get used to us eventually.

Girlgeek, pictures just don't do your boys justice!   They're both gorgeous cats!

I still need to look up your button-nosed algae eater....  You and guygeek have an impressive collection  :).

Re: Question about Giraffe Cat behavior

I have not had a chance to view him at all today.  I just got home at 11pm, and feed him immediately.  I will probably be up for another hour or so, so I will see if he does anything.

Re: Question about Giraffe Cat behavior

Well, removing the rock and feeding more has not helped.  In the last 2 hours I have added food to the tank 3 times and the giraffe cat is either still hungry or that is not the issue.  Im not sure what to do.

Odd, I was really thinking that would help. Sorry to hear the guy is still anxious. I'll see what I can dig up. :( I know Girlgeek was researching last night.

Re: Question about Giraffe Cat behavior

Okay, if anyone knows about Giraffe Cats, it's the guys at Fish -R- Us in the Woodlands.  It's been so long since I've talked to them, but I think their names are Mike and Alex?  Someone out there can probably help out with their names.  Maybe call them tomorrow and describe the anxiety.  I bet they will be able to offer suggestions much better than us.

                            They open at 10:30am.

I really wish we had been able to come up with the solution, but it's more important to find out how to get him happy.  They are wonderful, sweet, social fish and I'd hate to see you lose out on that.

The guys out at Fish-R-Us have always been so great everytime I've been out there and am sure they'd be more than happy to offer suggestions and help.  They actually have some of the most beautiful cats I've seen...in fact, I think we talked about them in another thread a long time ago??  You probably already know all about them since you are out on that side of town.

I believe your thinking of Jason, who owns fish-r-us, but i dont think i will call him just yet.  I hate calling people about a problem if I did not purchase the item, fish in this care, from them.  I will call alex at Ultimate fish since that is were I got the cat from.

I have no problem dropping excessive amounts of food for giraffe, but I am worried I will over feed him or really spike the ammonia levels.

                                YES!  Thank You!  Jason.

I just mention him because he's really passionate about his Fronts and Giraffe Cats.

Your guy may just be going through a growth spurt and thinks he's starving to death.  Hoover went through a 'drama queen' thing when he was bulking up.  Always hungry...always begging at the glass.  But never went up to the top like your guy.

Would you mind keeping this thread going with updates until you find out what's going on with him?  There is so little information out there about Giraffe Cats and I think this would help a lot of people, including myself.
