I am looking for suggestions regarding algae eaters that will work well in an 8 gallon planted nano aquarium that currently has a few danios and tetras and nothing exotic in the way of plants. Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.

shrimp, nerlite snail or O-cat'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Argh, just wrote an answer and it didn't post. Anyways!
How long has your tank been set up? If it's fairly new, and especially if it's still cycling, I'd wait on the otos (Otocinclus), who aren't very forgiving when it comes to water quality. (I know, some have otos that are tanks, but in general...) The olive nerites are great for algae, and will be wonderful in your 8 gallon. As for the shrimp, it depends on what kind of algae you want eaten and what kind of tetras you have. Some tetras will gladly accept shrimp as a nice meal. And if you're looking for something to focus more on the glass and similar surfaces, I'd go with the nerites or otos. 8)"Millennium hand and shrimp!"
