  • Gonopodium, xtra long

Now that I have your attention...  :)
I have some dynamite lyretail, super-veil swordtails with extra long gonopodiums. I've read these cannot breed due to the obvious. Has anyone ever had these breed? I know about breeding the super-veil F's w/ regular M's, so no genetics course here, plz. Just wondered if what I read holds true. Thx guys.

Let's see...if you put mature males with mature females, and they get pregnant...that would solve the problem of how long is too long.
I don't know how long is too long with my Mollies, or Guppies...so far I seem to have spawn, so everything is working, seems like.
I have read that too long is not good, maybe 'cause the sperm gets shot out into the water past where it needs to go.
I haven't seen any males with super-fish intelligence, so the males follow instinct and get right up on the females, and that could be the problem.
Let us know how it works out in a coupla months.

It has been known for quite sometime that they can't breed [that is to say that one has not breed yet.] I'd consider it a waste of time to try: the lyre tail trait has been around for over 25 years and there are no reports of the males breeding. They are not sterile, but they cannot get the sperm in. Some artificial methods are being tried.

              Gonopodial envy?
Are you saying that other swordtails gonopodium are too small????
Cameo, I did not know you had minimal gonopodial requirements!

I was thinking about this the other day...How come you can't take the male out and "circumcise" him??? I think a razor blade would do it. I seem to remember hearing about betta breeders trimming fins with a razor blade, so why not gonopodiums??? I mean, then the thing wouldn't be too long and he could probably aim a little better. Maybe it would be a nice experiment to try!! LOL!

Fins are like limbs....you can still function to some degree without them..... genitals would not serve the purpose anymore if cut off or shortened. 8O

                        Howdy,

Can you post some pictures or what colors do you have?  If they are nice and affordible I would be interested in buying or trading for some females.  The males will try to breed but can not (I have heard stories of males breeding when they are younger) AI is successful and a way to accomplish the use of the males.  The best thing is to breed the females to a Hifin male or a normal fin male out of the same line.  I might have one young extra hifin male that is pineapple out of a Hifin X Lyretail to give you the nice long fins.

I have a meeting in Houston on Thursday, are the fish in Surgarland or at Fish Ranch II; I might be able to stop by if you have a couple extra females.  later, ken

Nothing really new here in the last 35 years.
Lyretail malees have long gonopodium and dificulty impregnating females.  Many breeders have reported success after trimming gonopodium to normal length. Most breeders use hi-fin males & lyretail females and get a 25hflt/25hf/25lt/25normal split (see pundit squares)
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

I think I would have nightmares for the rest of my life if I attempted your suggestion, loopy119! Just the way I was raised. I'll leave stuff like that to the experts.
Ken, I got the last 3 males from FR. Someone else came in and bought all the females before me. So, I figure if they can't breed, it's the last of their line at my house. In the meantime, I'm enjoying their beauty. I'll post some pics later.
