  • Tank rescape

After several hours of cleaning and getting my new filter set up, I rescaled the tank with holey rock and some drift wood. Added 3 bags of purien and the water seems good. Debating if i should add some fake pants to give it color or just leave it. Thought, suggestions? This is an 125 long.

I always like seeing some greenery in a tank. Perhaps some fake sweet flag? I would also consider adding some Anubias or Java Fern, I think they would be fine in your tank and not be eaten. They grow slow and are easy to take care of. No extra care needed and grow very slow.

Any suggestions where to get cheap java fern. I like the idea of creating a big group of it.

Here on the box is a good place to start. I'd call around and price it before driving. There is quite a variety of different varietals (Windelov, Needle leaf, Trident, ect.) and not everyone has all. Bob's Tropical Plants used to have bundles for reduced prices and some dealers on The planted Tank forum offered decent prices. They are slow growers and something to always grab when you spot them and eventually have a huge collection...

I definitely like the ones with a larger leaf. I saw the sword fern, is that the typical fern?

I like the group of fern in the middle by the DW on the left.

Looks like regular Java Fern and its tough so your cichlids won't be tempted to chew it up

It looks great in larger tanks and systems. The narrow and needle varieties grow a bit denser. Windelov and Trident have stranger upper leaf patterning and structure. It does not do well in substrate, so be certain to attach it via cotton thread to either stone or driftwood. Eventually it will grow and attach itself. Jamming into a crevice of the wood always worked well for us and holey rock seemed made for it. Occasionally you'll have a leaf 'brown' and appear to be dying/dead. This is actually a form of reproduction and the leaf will sprout new plantlets from the leaf. Once a bit larger just separate and attach to another spot.

I was looking at bobs tropical and saw they had a java fern mat for 15. Would that go in the substrate or would I tie that o my DW?

Tied to driftwood or rocks for sure. I think someone had some Java fern up for sale in the free stuff section earlier today, you may want to look into that. I think that anubias will also probably do fine
