Does anyone know of a good source for pure ammonia? I've been looking all over and every place I've been only carries ammonia with surfactants or lemon scent.
You use it for fishless cycle....provide the ammonia and then the bacteria will eventually grow unless you use seeded media and in that case it will multiply to push the ammonia through the nitrogen cycle.
It allows you to end up with a full size beneficial bacteria colony to handle the fish load since you are replicating the fish load with ammonia.
y not just go to lfs and buy that cycle starter stuff then? might cost a buck or 2 more but instead of drivin all over town lookin for a .50cent bottle of ammonia. OR use fresh shrimp. that works GREAT.
Ammonia you can control better through testing and adding more....the cycle stuff IMO doesn't work as good but Bio-spira I think is the best! But with the cycle starter/instant cycle additives there is no sure way of telling if the tank is ready till it's too late since most suggest adding right when you add fish. With ammonia you can actually build up the BB colony and test for with hard numbers to back it up.
It's personal preference when you really think about it.

Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.
yes, i saw that thread before i posted but i've already checked all the stores mentioned in that thread, the ones in my area anyway. i've been to ace hardware, walmart, target, my local dollar stores and the cheap "food town" grocery stores too. every bottle of ammonia i've been able to find either has surfactants or is scented.
i was wondering if someone knew of a specific store/location in houston i could get it at.
I would check in a pool supply store and see if they have something like that.. Else the only other place I could think of would have been ace hardware but you have already been there..

Might try a reprographics place. They used to use ammonia in the old diazo blueline machines. There are still a few of those old behemoths in use at some of the old plants. google diazo blueline ammonia and you can find info on the process and likely some places that sell it.
It was potent stuff - one close strong whiff and you'd actually pass out or puke (or both). 26 degrees Baum was the strength of it. Not sure if it will do what you want though, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have any other additives in it.
