Not sure exactly which forum to put this in, but i am thinking about staining my stand and canopy, but I am wondering if the stand can be done while tank is stocked? Would the fumes be toxic to the fish? the canopy will be done outside but I was not sure about the stand. Depending on what yall think i may just build a new stand and stain it in the garage.

Re: staining a stand and canopy
Don't see why it can't be done.
Just make sure the house is well ventilated so that YOU don't choke on the fumes.

Re: staining a stand and canopy
If the tank is on the stand there will be portions you won't be able to stain. If that's not an issue for you, then I don't see any problems except as already mentioned the fumes and the potential risk of staining or splattering items that you did not intend to stain. I'd make sure the top of the tank was well covered as well, just in case. Fumes, overspray and splatters can find their way to the darnest of places.Reasoning with some people is like trying to nail jello to a wall...

Re: staining a stand and canopy
I am not sure that the fumes wouldnt get to the water surface..
Personally to make sure that its done right you are going to want to sand and stain it.. I know it would be more than just a small pain in the .... to empty then move stain sand stain again, poly so that its water treated etc, but in the end worth it. Make sure poly it so that water on the wood does not damage the stand later.

Re: staining a stand and canopy
10 years ago my son started a greas fire in the Kitchen and it was finally put out with a chemical extinquisher. Made a mess in the Kitchen but no where else that I could see. Two days later all the africans in the living room were dead.
Better safe than sorry.
I would take the water level down and move it to a temp location. Then take the stand outside and paint it with a combination stain/varathane (plastic waterproofing)'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

most of the oxygen/air that's in aquarium water - where most fish breathe it from - is absorbed from the surface and/or an air pump. If it's in the air, it will be in the water.
I second phishphreeks suggestion - lower the water and relocate it temporarily.
Cinder blocks are pretty cheap - those and a couple of pieces of 2x4's and you've got a cheap temp stand until the stand is done. The ultimate oxymoron - Narcolepsy and ADHD.
Who says you can`t have it all??!!
