  • Brown algae

I have a problem with brown algae. What is the easiest easy to get rid of it? I took everything out and scrubbed it in tap water. I have play sand with gravel on top as substrate. I did a 100% water change. Actually I removed the gravel and washed it in a bucket. Then I sprayed the sand with water, mixing it really well for about 15 minutes and then filled and drained st the same time for about an hour. After filling and treating the water the algae is about as bad as before. It has been 9 days since I did all that. Should I soak the decorations in bleach?

Have you tried a total blackout for a few days?

Brown Algae is a pain. Natural sunlight or led lights are my Achilles heel.

Nerite snails work well and Siamese algae eaters.

Is the tank close to a window? and how long do you run your lights?

It's not near a window, but the lights are on fit about 12 hours a day.

i use zebra nerites in a few tanks and they keep it spotless. just depends on what you plan on putting in there if those are an option. amano shrimp also eat a wide variety of algae.

a total blackout is something to try if you have nothing in the tank anyway. i have my lights on around the same amount per day give or take.

I was also wondering if the snails will stay in the tank, or will they climb out? I have a lid, but there is about a 2 inch opening across the back.

You could cover the tank with a dark blanket. With no light at all this will kill the the algae. But it takes 3 day.

homeless aquatics almost always has nerites (send a PM to armthehomeless). i picked mine up from him at his place. otherwise just call around to see if they are in stock

my tank has a few inch gap as well. it did freak me out at first because i did see them above the water line often, and even on the underside of lid/glass for period of time. nerites can live out of water for a few hours or so. they never literally climbed out though, and always go back into the water.

i still do a periodic count though to make sure
