Interesting to read of this failure. My hydor 200 just failed about 3 weeks ago....shot my temps to upper 90s and killed all but one beckford pencil fish and amono shrimps. I think I caught it before it peaked heat wise. I'm on the fence as to whether or not I should replace it with another hydor. This one lasted almost 3 years. Like others mentioned, I have other heaters that are almost a decade old. But, I prefer the in-line type for aesthetic reasons.

Were these standard tube-type heaters that failed, or the Hydor under-gravel heater?
I am particularly concerned because I just plumbed a Hydor under-gravel thru the glass on a new 60G cube, so I'm stuck with it whether it works or not.
Doesn't anybody sell a safety thermostat that will turn off a heater if the temp shoots up?
I cooked a beautiful breeding pair of dempseys years ago. The temp reached nearly 100°. The female died. The male lived but he was kinda retarded after that. Seriously. Poor guy.

i drilled my tank for an under-gravel heater, right?
well the thermostat just came in the mail.
It blew out.
So now I have plumbed a heater,... a $100 heater,.... thru the glass, cycled the tank, planted plants, bought the fish, and the heater is a fail.
I must go stab something now.
