  • New Discus bought at Auction...

    Hi Everyone...
I bought a Red Melon Discus at the aution Sunday and I am having some problems with him and another discus I bought at the Fall auction. The moment I put the new discus in the old one started chasing him around and hasn't stopped since Sunday around 3pm. I moved the whole tank around hoping it would keep the old one from messing with the new discus. I even made three little caves for the new one to hide in. The old discus just won't give in, he is now backing the newbie into the corner and biting at him. I don't know what to do!!!    I thought discus were not aggressive fish. :o  Also I have a larger discus and 6 baby Angels in there and they seem to be doing fine. It's just these two.  I need some advice on what I should do. I don't want my new discus to be hurt by the old one.

    Thanks

    Amber

Btw: The old discus is a Red Melon as well and is about 3". The new one is about 3-3.5"

Re: New Discus bought at Auction...

Ok. so from what I have read, putting just one discus in the tank with the other two was a mistake.

This is what I read, is this correct??

Discus do better in groups of >6 fish. They are cichlids and therefore will form heirarchies amongst themselves. By adding a single fish to an established group you are just asking for trouble as that single fish will not have a chance in the already established heirarchy. In the ideal situation, all the fish will be from the same source and introduced to the tank at the same time. One thing you can try is to remove all of the fish and move everything around in the tank and then put them back in. This will sort of mess up their territories and level the playing field somewhat.

Should I remove the one of the fish, the last time I did that, one of them died.

Thanks Loretta! I met Walter at the first auction and figured this would be the quickest way to get a response. Thank you for the help!

Re: New Discus bought at Auction...

Amber the best thing to do is remove all the discus & move everything around in the tank some what. Put the new discus in 1st then add the others.
This is not a common problem unless they are in a small tank.

They are just trying to figure out who is going to be the boss.

Re: New Discus bought at Auction...

Thanks Walter. They are in  55 Gallon tank, I thought they had plenty of room.

How long should I keep the discus out of the tank before putting them back in?  The last time we moved them we lost one and I'm afraid of that happening again, but I also don't want him to keep picking on him so bad that he dies.

                Thank for you help,

                Amber

55 is a good size for them to swim back & forth in.
Just over night should be fine or if you can just put something in to seperate the tank for a few days
