  • How hardy are elephant nose?

From the look of it, I'd say they're fairly difficult fish to keep? I have a 2 YO passive 55g community tank in the garage. Would like to add 3 EN if that's a possible. TIA!

      If it's African, I can't imagine it's that difficult.

Spongebob, I want to hear all about it if you get them. I remember petsmart used to sell them a long time ago. I always heard they were so hard to keep. I'm surprised I never tried them, but I'm sure I would've killed'em back then.

do it! saw a bunch of them at Fish land. They've had them for months, so I guess they are hardy. Wish I have room for them

they are in the mid range i think in terms of maintenance, but do get into the 9" range. so just be sure to have a 55gal or so minimum. they are also timid and like lots of hiding places...so if placed into an open aquarium that could lead to stress. people have those ghost tubes so the fish can feel secure and you can still observe.

i hear once they get use to you, they can actually become very affectionate and eat from your hand. stock up on meaty frozen foods!

Good to know. Just dropped $200 on guppies, loaches, and an assortment of mollies. I'll wait a couple of wks to get everything situated before getting an EN or two. Thanks!

more then one in less than 500g will result in one in the end regardless. their conspecific aggression is off the charts. just fyi

Did some more reading on the EN. It says that this guy is actually very delicate. Need a planted tank with low pH and can be territorial.

Knife fish are like EN in they both have an electrical sonar they both use to stun small fish. Also KF get real big.

Ok back to the drawing board. Just wanted something different in my tank. Maybe an upside down African butterfly fish?

there are a lot of oddball options...i always liked rope fish (just make sure the top of your tank is closed off well since they jump)

i think the smaller knifefish types are 8 inches....but some do get much larger
