I love HAW! He does get random selections sometimes, but John is super helpful and that is my go to store. That's where I got my Plecos and platys. There have been times I was thinking about a fish or shrimp and he deterred me based on my tank. Not just out for a sale like some of these places I've been to. I haven't lost a fish from John yet and you can tell he takes good care of them.

depends on the layout you are planning for. with an 18" light, you figure there are 6" on each side that wont get the same amount of light as the central section.
the 30" length tank is in between. usually with LED strips you get 24" or 36"....some fit multiple tank sizes, but the lower bound is the size of the light (so if it says 24" to 36" that means the light itself is 24" and the end extensions can go out to 36")
its personal preference, but i typically try to get a light that spans the entire length as best i can find. marineland does have a 30x12 inch hood...but dont know if that will fit your tank width wide
