  • Light for 10g planted....

While I have been working on upgrading my 150g lighting extra I decided to renew parts of the glass tops i.e. I am replacing the hinges and plastic back strip with new ones made of clear plastic. While I was at it I decided to rpleace the crappy cover on my 10g. I went with clear acrylic top, and now I want a light for it. I was thinking of a 20 - 30w compact fluorescent. I want a nice unit, ideally on legs, that will look nice over this tank. Being a 10g this tank is 20" x 10". I don't see many units out there. Jebo has one quite cheap, but then it comes with a 50/50 bulb where ideally I want a 6700k.

    Anyone got any ideas?

You could always buy one of those cheap incandescent strip lights and then instead of 2 incandescent lights, you could buy some screw-in compact fluorescents. I know Walmart has some really inexpensive ones especially for plants, I think they're 20W each. Current also makes a 40W 20" compact fluorescent fixture, and it comes with legs.

After a little search, this is the cheapest I've found it online:

The Odyssea would work, of course, and probably be the least expensive, but then you'd probably have to buy a new bulb, which would add up.

Coralife makes a single PC 20" but that also comes with a 50/50 I believe. At least it would be a little more rugged than the Odyssea. Since you brought up legs, the Odyssea comes with the flip-up type legs that are actually pretty convenient, and you have to buy the legs for Coralife's seperately. The legs between the two are interchangeable, I sold my Odyssea PC, but kept the flip legs for one of my Coralife's.

        Hmm,   !

Just realized the Satellite comes with a 50/50 bulb, as well.

coralife has the 96w quad tube light that fits over the 10gal nicely.

96 watts! Holy cow! I could just thow some herbs and a few veg in, make fish soup!

Just kidding! But I am really looking at 20 - 30 w.  I am even considering the desk aquarium lamps...two of them at 13w a piece....

Maybe you could get one of those cheap 10g incandescent hoods and replace the standard bulbs with screw-in compact flourescents? The desk lamps at my office would work pretty good... they use short quad tubes.

I am kinda going for the glass box look with a light proud of the top........ I saw those mini aqualights. they clip on the glass, and i saw someone does 6700k bulb for them...Of cours a desk lamp with a good reflector would be pretty cool too though...
