So I went over to unload a fellow HoustonFishBoxer of some of her fish and as her husband was cleaning out her Eheim filter. He came across to little fish. Not fry, little tiny Rosy barbs. One male and one female. The female was 1/3 the size of the male. The funny part is there haven't been Rosy Barbs in that tank for over a month. They came to live with me in early February. They are now in my 10g community tank. Cute as buttons but getting picked on a little bit. My very gentle Betta is shepherding them around the tank and protecting him the way he protects my Apple snails in there. When they are big enough I'll put them with the other Rosys. Has anyone else found not fry but surviving fish in there filters?

Re: Little Fish in the Filter
I gave a lady at my job who had a betta a mystery snail, and she swears they're best friends so that was interesting to hear that from someone else. I told her the snail was probably following the betta, waiting for it to poo. I made a a pre-filter sponge for the intake out of the coarse aquaclear sponge and it seems to do the trick and is porous enough to keep the water flowing. I tried using those foam hair curlers b/c someone suggested it, but found that it was a little too fine and kept getting clogged.

Re: Little Fish in the Filter
My blue Betta his name is Alpha. Ever since a friend gave him to me has been in my community tank. Once I had a guppy who was dieing. My plates started attacking him and out came my Betta. He guarded him until he died and then just swam around him keeping the others away until I got the dead guppy out. Later the same plates started attacking my Apple Snail and again here comes the betta to the rescue. Thinking it was a fluke I went to pet store to look at other Bettas. I would put the tip of my finger up to the glass. Some would rear up immediately. Others would back of and some would swim up to investigate. I brought a curious one and put him in a bowl with a small Apple Snail. The two of them have been together for three weeks and they are best buds. So it seems I've found two with really good dispositions.

Re: Little Fish in the Filter
What a GREAT name for a betta!!
My betta (R.I.P. :( ) absolutely hated the large ramshorn that shared his tank. He spent a lot of time stalking him, and then attacking. But it seems you've got a couple who aren't as cranky!"Millennium hand and shrimp!"

Re: Little Fish in the Filter
I found 2 rosie red feeders in one of my HOB type filters once, don't know how they got there or how long they had been there, but they were super fat and the inside of my filter was super clean. I fed them to my albino frog later that day.

NewAquaMom...you should write a nice Chidren's Book, like "Alpha Betta and the Rosy Barbs in the Filter", and include their friends Escar and Go, the Apple Snails! :o :clap:Working for a better Future for my Fish!
