Bottom cracked in my 270. Need to talk to someone who may be able to replace the bottom, to see if the best option is just to replace or repair.

Who is he the best at doing that type of thing here in the area?

Back panel would be a pain to re-drill for my plumbing so if I can repair for a reasonable cost I would rather do that. I want to weigh that against buying a whole new tank.

Would buy used but not many 7x2x 31" tanks pop up on line.

Talk to Eric in Hockley who took over Ocean Aquatics at 281-477-3305. I will tell you it is probably cheaper to find a used tank of the same size or buy a new one for the cost to repair a tank this size.

I have repaired a 135 gallon tank with a cracked bottom by siliconing a 3/8 piece of glass on top of the crack. Worked great! For your 270 you might need a 1/2 inch piece of glass for a patch. I guess it would depend on the extent of the crack.

I would agree that it may be cheaper to buy a used one the same size. The problem is the tall tanks (mine is 31" tall) don't come on the market very often.

As for repair being as much as new, that's what I'm trying to find out. My logic is that a major component of an aquarium's price has to be material/glass. If I have 4 perfectly good pieces of glass (the sides) and need to replace 1 (the bottom) it would seem logically the thing to do. That would be easy if I wanted to do the work my self but I don't so I then have to take into account one of the other components...Labor. So, if it's going to cost me as much to buy a new tank as it does to replace the bottom due to labor then the decision gets much easier.

The one thing I do know is that sometime the world does not follow my logic. :-)

A good start would be to call a glass company and get a quote on the cost of the glass. I paid 225.00 for a 3/8 glass, 72 inches x 22 inches. You probably need 1/2 inch and a larger piece of glass so could be 400.00 or more for the glass. But call and find out.
