  • My 265 almost there

I have been working pretty hard to get things up and complete before I have to travel again. I am still working out some of the flow rates and making some minor adjustments here and there. All in all the fish seem to be very happy. My wife is happy because we have all but reclaimed the living room back now that the 110 is out in the garage. I have been dropping little hints trying to convince her to keep it and put a fahaka in it....we will see.   Anyway wanted to show the progress and see what everyone thinks.  I have included the filtration also. Maybe overdoing it but I have heard mixed comments and not one straight answer from anyone including the manuafacture.

I heard from one LFS that you need to cycle water 8-10x  from another 4-6x   from a manufacturer 3-4x.  I also heard that you can overflow and not provide enough time for the air to water ratio in a  wet / dry. who knows.   I just know that I want it to be "sparkley" clean and clear.

Anyway I have included diagrams of the filtration system (mostly for my wife if something happens when I am out of town)

2- mag 12's running 100%   My overflow boxis a custom with 4 tubes that will flow around 2400gph or more. I am running two Rena xp4's to polish water and two 18watt UV filters.
Check it out and tell me what ya think. I made the canopy so that I could have it just how I wanted to fit the lights.

    Loretta(fishlady),

I also included a picture or two of the Yellow Fins.  They are doing great.

Deffinately go with a Fahaka. I have a 3yr old female who needs a boyfriend badly. Maybe we can get lucky and you will score a virulent male for her, hehe. I am contemplating breaking down and getting her a boyfriend and keep them in side by side tanks until she goes gravid, then a quick introduction and subsequent separation, hehe. 4-5X turnover is fine if done properly.

Please educate me. From the information I have shown here, am I doing right or headed in the wrong direction? Is there something I can change or do to make things better than what I am doing now?

I looked at the pictures and with the setup you have I would have to say that is about close the best filtration setup I have ever seen..
I am sure some of you people have seen better out there, but what I am seeing is about a 15x turnover + and quite a bit of things in there that will ensure that your water stays pure.   All I can say is WOW that is a beautiful setup !!

              Re: My 265 almost there

Well...what can I say but thanks . I have tried to read and research and listen to all the advise from the people like yourself. I had this planned in my head and tried to be methodical in planning this setup.  I will not be able to do another tank for sometime so this had to be right the first time. i still have a few details like making under the tank clean and presentable. I am very anal when it come to perfection. Thats why I asked for input here on the box to let me know thoughts or opinions. I appreciate your comments and look forward to some of the othe regulars here on the site.

So again thanks. I give credit to the fishbox.com and all the knowledgable people who have helped me out when I had a question.

              Thanks again

                Re: My 265 almost there

                Chris,
I am not saying you are wrong in any of your plans or what your focus is.
But I will say "turnover rate" is many times over emphasized and misses the real point of filtration.
If the goal is to mimic nature.
I have tried all types of filtration of the years and the coolest one "thing" I built was a 90g planted tank/refugium hooked up to a wet/dry, that filtered 3 tanks.
                Total 340 gallons.
It was all run with a Mag 9.

                  Re: My 265 almost there

I understand totally. Just trying to get the input from everyone here who has more experience than me. You can have all the money in the world but still have a crappy setup that doesnt work. I like for my fish to have the healthiest environment possible first and then clear the second. I want to eventually do a planted tank and refuge but dont think I have the time just yet.

Having a Porshe is great but if it has a lawn mower engine in it....then what.   thanks again for you input

I'm very surprised, did you not just pick this tank up a few days ago, and in that time you have managed to get all this done as well? ......Holy Moly, you work fast...... :)

Everything looks good....nice work there Chris.

                        Re: My 265 almost there

I would rethink the two Rena canisters......it leaves the second in line to starve if something were to happen.

                        Great looking set-up all around!
I personally shoot for 10-20x turnover rate regardless of how it's done.
