not sure if this is the right place to talk about or to post, but here it goes, so lets say you walk into a resturant, and see a whole bunch of aquariums, some are used for its live stocks for eating, stuff like lobster, fish, clam and crab. then there are a few tanks with other so called 'display' fish, turtle, pike fish and what nots, the water is so dirty, you can't really tell whats in it til you stick your head right next to the tank, but as you do it, theres this really bad aquarium water smell, it smells like someone hasn't clean the tank in years, algea all over it, and as for the turtle tank, a huge pike, 2 huge turtles with NO basking area what so ever, and NO filter either, and onlything for air is a small battary operated air pump, (the one you would use for fishing trips) what would you do?

Re: abused fish and etc...
mahoro is right, though...if it was a dog living in poor conditions, everyone would be living in an uproar. I mean - if a dog doesn't have clean water to DRINK much less LIVE IN, it's counted as neglect and the dog can be taken away. I think whoever is responsible for the fish needs to be held accountable and if they just can't take care of the tank, they need to sell the fish and move on. Don't keep something you can't take care of.
Just my 2 cents..

Re: abused fish and etc...
It really depends on a couple factors first. Is it a corporate restaurant/chain or private/family owned?
Chains have more accountability to corporate offices so there is an escalation point.
That said, I would try NOT to put them immediately on the defensive or make them think you're some sort of extremest nut.
I would offer simple information on what these animals need for a healthy environment and how it is that you know this. I would also explain what could happen to the animals in the current conditions if left untreated. You could recommend some information sources and some services. Then I would follow up with the question "So do you think this is something you will pursue?" and "because I really enjoy your restaraunt but seeing the tank that way makes it really difficult for me to enjoy it to it's fullest"
If they fix the problem, great. If not you can escalate if it's a chain. If it's not a chain you could (if you feel really strongly) take a much more aggressive approach. All men are created equal but his choices determine his value and what's in his heart determines his worth.
"Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end"

Ugh - saw something that made me furious tonight
Now there are places that just shouldn't sell live animals of any kind. Especially if there can't be someone looking after them all the time. Y'all know what I am talking about - Wally World. You go in there - all hours of the night - and see those poor things that never get dark tanks to rest in, have ick, swimming around dead tankmates that are there for days - despite being told when you point it out to management that the dead are removed every morning...when you have seen the same corpse for a week...
If that wasn't bad enough - today I go in there - grabbing a filter cartridge - and I saw not 1, not 2, but 3 male betta stuck in the same community tank. One looked A OK. The other two looked moments from death's door - ragged fins, missing scales, etc.
My bf took off when they told us the employees were on break and got the night manager. He wouldn't let me get them out (store policy) but then drops one on the floor and attempts to pick it up with dry hands....
To make it worse, the tank some jerk dumped them all into - probably some scum who wanted to see them fight - was chock full of ick and dying mollies. I had him use fresh water and dechlorinate it because he was going to take the ick-full water and use that on the poor injured things.
I made the manager take medicine off the shelf (as some were locked up ) and treat the bettas with betta medicine - and the mollies with something for the ick. I hope the bettas heal and survive. Found a 4th empty container - was confused - turns out the same jerks tossed a male and female into the same container to see what would happen. The manager had already walked away - so I fixed the situation myself.
I see it all over the place - if you treat mammals like that people go through the roof, but it seems like not even pet organizations care much about how the public treats fish.
*sigh* There should be health inspectors for any business that sells living animals. Of any kind.
Kris
PS. Sorry for the rant - but to see those poor gorgeous bettas all beaten and near death from exhaustion and worse...
