I am getting ready to setup a new tank... 100 gallon.. gravel bottom, driftwood decor,, and some plastic plants... we will have Blood parrots, and prob some yellow labs,,, maybe some silver dollors.... the question is about the rock wall I am gonna build.. I plan on building out the corners and the backof the tank with a rock wall or sorts... I have located a rock called "Rustic Ranch" and it is perfect for what I am going to do.. small light weight and able to stack like bricks.. here is a picture... does anyone have any experience with this rock.. is it high in metal content has any one used this? is there any way I can test the rock to see it there is any effects on the fish? of coarse no one at the rock store (nursery) had any clues... they did add that they have used it in pond applications... here is a picture... this stuff is .20 a pound.. this piece is about 1.5" x 1.5" x 6" in size... nice texture... any info would be appreciated.. thanks Cope

Re: Rock Question
What we have done is clean the rock really good and soak it for about 12 hours. Fill a bucket with water and test the water. Then add the rock and test the water again after about 6 hours. Compare the results.
This looks like a type of limestone which we found raises PH.
You can also put a little vinegar on it. If the vinegar bubbles it is an alkaline based rock (like limestone) and will raise PH
Hope this helps. All men are created equal but his choices determine his value and what's in his heart determines his worth.

Re: Rock Question
Try vinegar to see if it fizzes, this will tell if the rock has buffering properties
Then get some pickling lime...build a paste and lay it on there. I found this one out by accident but it there are metals in the rock it will rust right away.
Other then that I would soak it and test water before/after.700g Mini-Monster tank

Re: Rock Question
Yeah, the limestone we had was construction grade and was REALLY hard as well. 12 hours should be plenty. All men are created equal but his choices determine his value and what's in his heart determines his worth.
