i put a power head up to the intake in the tank under water. when all the air bubbles are out. i plug in the canister. ehiem classics are good. but i HATE cleaning cannisters so the quick hose disconnect on the rena is a big plus for me.

GEOFF, DON'T TELL ME THAT!!  I have a Pro II 2028... where is it prone to leak at?  Mine has worked fine for the past 6 months that I've owned it - bought it used though.

as planned, i went and bought filters today, i could not quite make up my mind so i got a rena xp3 and an eheim ecco 2236, i have to return one, xp3 rated for 175gal and the 2236 is rated for 80gal and of course my tank is 65 gal, also bought hydor inline 300w heater, ADA aquasoil amazonia 3 9ltr bags and some 50lbs of small gravel/sand, still need to decide on the lighting, i almost got the 260watt 48" aqualight, but then i didn't, i currently have a 130w 24" aqualight, that is all i need for this but there is no way to put it on top of the 48" tank unless i make it look really bad, of course i could get the hagel glo 2*54watt t5 ho, arrggggg

I would keep the Rena xp3 only becuase I am partial to rena.
The more filteration you have on your tank the better. Most of my tanks are running 8x-10x what is reccomended.
Example my 160 I have 2 Rena xp3 and 2 Emperor 400. (= 1500 gph 9.3x turnover)
Rena xp3=350 GPH (5.3x turnover for your aquarium)
Ecco 2236= 186 GPH (2.8x turnover for your aquarium)

I would pick the Rena xp3 over the Ecco's....never liked those.

I am an ehiem fan. I have a 2213 that Ive had for 14 yrs no problems, a 2217 for 7yrs and the only problems is a lost a a few of the clamps but no leaks. I only have maybe 3 clamps for the past two years no leaks, and a 2262 which is great! No noise from any  of them.  as far as priming them.  After I clean them, i fill with water plug them up and hold them up side down for a few sec and they prime that way. NO LIP ACTION FOR ME!

I have a friend with an XP3 on his 115 and it stays spotless!!!!  Stay with the Rena for sure over the ECCO.  I used and XP3 on a 58 Oceanic and it kept it spotless.  Good amount of flow in the tank too if you just use the jet nozzle that it comes with.

Just curious, since this is a thread about filters, what is it that everyone dislikes about the Eccos? I must be missing something.

They are decent entry level canisters, I just think most of the folks on this forum have their personal favorites.  The Eheim classics are kinda like the Porsche 911, it hasn't changed except for more horse power in how many years...LOL???  It's a tried and true design that just works.  I don't know how long the XP line of canisters has been out for RENA, but once again...it's a tried and true design that just works.

Sorry Peter, but the Professional II series is very prone to leaking at the main O-ring gasket that goes between the case and motor/pump housing.

I would suggest to go ahead and get a spare to alwyas have on hand.

I would also suggest to get some silicone lubricant for o-rings to be used on that gasket atleast 2-3 times a year.

Thanks, I have only owned the Ecco and really like the ease of cleaning and priming it. With nothing else to compare it to it might really be the worst and I just thought it was great.
