  • adding epsom salt to tank

Through research I have learned that I can add epsom salt to my tank to give my scats the minerals ect. they need to thrive, they are brackish water fish kept in a fresh water tank.  What effect will this have on the FW fish in the tank with them??

    tank mates are as follows:
    oscar
    common plec
    gold fish
    black ghost
    green terror

    Thanks guys!

I have added it to my tanks before but only because my fish were a little bloated. It was like giving them an enema. After 24 hours they weren't bloated anymore.

With the Oscar and black ghost in there I would be worried.

The scats should get all the trace elements they need from their food if they have a good diet. No need for epsom salt.

          Lucy,

Short term use of salt - no effect on the FW fish. Long term - not recommended. If you want to keep the scats in a brackish environment you will need to set up another tank.
