    Re: New custom 300 gal

Ok, I need a littler clarification.  I understand that if you put the suction and discharge of the canister filter on the bottom glass of the aquarium that this would work quite well (as long as I utilized quick connect valves).  Geoff suggested to put the suction to the canister in the overflow box... I was thinking that this may pose a problem during a restart if all of the water from the overflow was emptied out into the wet/dry filter's sump.  Is this not a reasonable assumption?

I have seen some overflows that also have bottom slits in them. So that water overflows and also bottom siphons.

Not all the water will be emptied out into the sump, depending on what kind of intake plumbing you use....you may have as much as 50% or more in your Overflow reservoir...call me if you need further explantion.

If he place the eheim in the overflow and a power outages occurs. He have a greater chance burning up the pump when the power comes back on if the 2260 does not self prime itself.

Geoff, if he have a bottom silts in the overflow thats fine but  he will still need to place the return on the bottom glass.

              Re: New custom 300 gal

Also if you use durso/standman pipes in the overflow for the wet/dry (which you should cause it lessens the noise dramatically) then that will keep about 70% of the overflow itself filled with water if there is only top slits.

I have seen delock's set up and think it's efficient! I would do it the same way.

                Re: New custom 300 gal

                The tank dimensions will be 8' x 2' x 2.5' tall.  Standard 300 TALL.

I like Ek's idea with the pipes that extend up the overflow to maintain a constant water level in the overflow.  So, I'm assuming you just slide a sponge over the holes in the standpipe... this would be good if small fish/fry end up in the overfow, as well.

I am planning on drilling a hole on the opposite end of the aquarium as the overflow to drain into the canister filter.  The return from the canister is still up in the air.  I just need to get to the reverse flow UGF.  Probably another drilled hole in the bottom glass.  Any suggestions?

                  Re: New custom 300 gal

Anyone have experience with UV filters? Two options: 1) canister filter return - 634 gph (on label) 2) Mag 12 return - 1200 gph on label.... not sure what these flowrates equate to after compensating for head pressure and everything, but I just need an idea of what type of UV filter to buy.

                  Thanks.

Why would you need a uv filter?

                      Re: New custom 300 gal

There is only one hole on the durso/standpipe and I would not put any sponge on it that could potentially clog and cause a flood.

As for your return for the canister......I would do a single hole and have the pvc come up above the substrate with the endcap...then drill a few holes in the end cap so the return is blowing across the substrate. IMO the Undergravel Jets are kinda lame....You will still need to gravel vac so I don't see much point in them. Unless I am mistaken and you are really wanting to get Undergravel filter plates.

I have never seen much point in a UV.

                          Peter,

Whichever you decide, I really think you will be happier with a 1262 pump on the Eheim.  AS for UV sterilizer, I would go with one that is suited for inline use on the cansiter.  It will be more adaptable I think.

Turbo Twist 12x-36W UV Pond Clarifier
The Turbo Twist 12x UV Sterilizer unit eliminates single-cell algae for crystal clear ponds. The 36watt UV treats up to 8,800 gallons of pond water and features a quartz glass sleeve surrounded by a revolutionary "Turbo-Twist" spiral flow design to increase dwell time which in turn increases efficiency. The extended treatment time fully utilizes all the available UV output of the lamp, so it outperforms larger units. The lamp has a useful life up to 8,000 hours. The minimum flow rate is 1000 gph and the maximum flow rate should not excede 2200 gph. The unit is NOT submersible.

Hose-barb inlet and outlet is 1"
Interchangeable hose-barbed inlet and outlet is 5/8"

I would run this one on the discharge of your MAGDRIVE.  If you put it on the canister it would be flow starved.

The next size down The 6X, I have a used one with two good bulbs one used 6 months, the other new in box, but it is rated for 250 gallon tank and only 400gph.

Which with your 2260 would probably work just fine, as long as you did not upgrade to the 1262 pump.

Thanks for the great info guys.  Geoff, how much for the Turbo-twist 6x?  And will you be at the GHAC meeting at Delock's?

Ek, I think I've seen overflows with standpipes with holes drilled, or maybe slots, that is covered with a sort of foam.  I can make the top of the standpipes open in case the foam does get plugged to ensure that the overflow does not flood.  And I can use two of these with the two drain 1-1/2" drain holes.  What do you think?

BTW, I think I'll go with an end overflow with the entire side being sectioned off maybe 6 inches or so as the overflow.

This is really good info y'all!  I really do appreciate it and will definitely incorporate it in my design!

One more thing, check out this tank and stand.  I think I'll want the finished product to kind of mimic this design  Web Page Name

Those aren't standpipes....just regular drain pipes.....standpipes/durso's are to raise the water height in the overflow chamber to keep from having the high "waterfall" effect which is what makes the noise.....google either and find out what they really are.

The cheapest online I can find anywhere is $129.

I would take $75 for it no problem.  It has all the parts, directions, and the box it came in.  All you got to do is hook it up and run with it.
