when i was young and first started keeping fish, platys, swordtails, mollies were my main fish and they were plenty exciting, they would always have fry and they would grow up and have more fry, recently i got a couple of platys, soon with all odds against them they still had babies who grew up to be adults, these fish have many nice colors, they breed well, they are hardy and low maintenance, they are not dumb (as many might say), and they are active, then why do they seem so boring and ugly to me now? i can't seem to like them or appreciate them anymore? does this happen to others? no other fish bore me this much, i almost get annoyed by them for no apparent reason!

As we grow in the hobby, our tastes and preferences change. The same thing happened to me, finfan. I used to love guppies and gouramis. I no longer keep either.

When I started in the hobby.. I was a solid SA man. I have always loved cichlids, but you would never see me with any other fish but an SA.
Restarting the hobby after a 22yr hiatus all I wanted was Africans... As I get really into them more and more, I am like J-WS6 leaning more and more to Tanganyikan's

yeap ! stay with tangs, but for me it's all about personality.
I can't enjoy fish that just swim around the tank with no purpose.

When Iwas younger you would never catch me devoting as much time as it takes to breed & raise bettas.
I started with livebearers, went on to catfish, then anabantids, then sicklids..... now I have baby tetras in my planted tank........'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'Comment

i guess its a freshwater hobby cycle:
phase 1 - goldfish/platy/swordtail/molly/bettas
phase 2 - tetras/barbs/rasboras
phase 3 - cichlids
phase 4A - other specialty species (puffers, shrimps, catfish, etc.)
phase 4B - species only from any or all of the above including successful breeding and environment (planted, biotope, specific lakes/rivers/streams)
of course there are no clear lines between these and does not fit everyone65 gallon - ADA 120p - planted

Same here, my first tank had 3 long finned albino danios, 3 pineapple swordtails, and 3 head & tail light tetras, all on sale for $1 each. That was my reason for picking them out. I had them in a 10G tank for about a year before I got bored with them and gave them away. That was 12 years ago but I still remember them. I have kept SA cichlids, africans, various tetras, barbs, oddball, and seem to lose interest after about a year on all of them. Right now I have africans and goldfish. The fish I REALLY want I can't have just yet. Some are too expensive for my meager budget and others will grow too big for the tanks I have right now and am not in the position to get anything bigger. I want some tropheus, a giant gourami, and a clown knife. I also want more peacocks for my african tank and a lionhead for my goldfish tank.58G Malawis

I went from Mbunas to Peacocks to Tangs....now to saltwater. Saltwater is so flippin' expensive that I'm now venturing back to Tangs with a touch of Malawi Peacocks. I never can make up my mind what I really want to keep so I just keep a little bit of everything. If I could just build a tank and leave it alone, who knows what I would be capable of....LOL!!!Comment

In forty years of fishkeeping my tastes have wandered quite a bit. My favorites are discus and Tangs, but I've got a couple oddballs, too. In one tank I have two tire track eels and in another I have a betta in with a zig zag eel. I've been told it's the definition of eclectic stocking but strangely enough, they get along fine. I have a couple invert tanks, too.

i am a newbie compared to most of you, but i did start keeping fish when i was 13, i kept fish until about 17, at this time i started with goldfish and platy, kept various tetras, barbs, bettas, gouramis, angels, turtles etc.
then moved to go to college and had to halt the hobby for about 11 years, started back up again with tetras/barbs/bettas, currently keeping mbunas/SA/CA and dwarfs, planted tank etc.
due to new time constraints, i can only maintain one planted tank, so once the 65gallon is cycled, i will move the angels and checkerboards and get a pair of apistos maybe, and a big school of tetra or barb or rasbora, once this tank is 6+ months old and established/plants grown i might venture into discus
i will keep my current 55gallon mix cichlids, but if time becomes an issue, i might break that one down and just maintain the planted, i will still keep my current 30gallon planted for qt or separation purposes65 gallon - ADA 120p - planted
