There are a bunch of west africans like :
      Nanochromis sp.and Pelvicachromis sp.

      ... Tons more that I can't think of ...
I think this is good idea to create a list though.

There are quite a few west african dwarf cichlids.  Also, lots of tanganyikans.  Most of the shell dwellers for example.

Looking at the fish in the following genus(genuses?) would be a good start, 'lamprologus', neolamprologus, pelvicachromis, nanochromis, Steatocranus, and Benitochromis.

        Also:

        Pseudotropheus polit
        Pseudotropheus saulosi
        Pseudotropheus demasoni
        Metriaclima livingstonii
        Metriaclima aurora

That would be my list for starters.

Most of them are not.  I believe that all of the shellies are in the genus 'lamprologus', neolamprologus and metriaclima.  (Which is not to say that all those fish are shellies)

mrairportjunke -- I have the book called "Back to Nature" -- Tanganyika Cichlids -- 2nd edition.   Do you want me to go though it and list all the cichlids that grow less than 4in (10cm ?)  -- it will take some time but there will be a LONG LONG list afterwards

I have two books on Tanganyika fish.
                        1. "Back to Nature Guide to Tanganyika Cichlids" by Ad Konings (2nd edition)
                        2. "Tanganyika Cichlids in their Natural Habitat" by Ad Konings

The first book is awesome to tell you about the size of your fish, and if they have been imported from the lake etc..   But lacks on descriptions of many things.  This is where the second book comes in handy I think.  The second books value comes in when you really want to know more in depth knowledge about the subject, but there is little about size of the fish etc. which the first book gives.

                        my 2 cents
