  • algae on holey rock?

I have some algae that has begun to grow on my holey rock.  I have read that it is not bad for the fish and i have seen them eating it.    should i get an algaecide for the tank or just leave it?  thanks shawn.

I would never put any kind of algaecide in the tank....You could increase your water changes, cut back on feedings, don't leave the light on for too long, or get some Nerites....Nerites will clean up THR like no other!

Last I saw.....Aquarium World on 290 had some in the "Trapdoor snail" tank.
I heard that Dan from HAW was suppose to acquire some but never contacted him to see.

What size tank are you having problems with?

its a 75 gallon.  i have started doing about 30% water changes every week and a half.  the light is on atleast 10 hours a day.  maybe i should cut back on that.

I would cut back on the lighting....If you are having it on that long so you can enjoy it when you leave to work and when you come back what you can do is have it on for a few hours before and aft work with a timer.

I put a Golden Nugget and Royal Pleco in one of my tanks.  All I can say is WOW.. They made my rocks SHINE.....  when you look at my tanks that is the tank that has the cleanest windows and rocks of any of my tanks.. and it used to be the WORST one.

                  Re: algae on holey rock?

Older bulbs can contribute to faster algae growth than newer ones, I would recommend a timer as well. I've had the same pieces of tx holey rock for a couple of years now. The small bit of algae that does grow on it is devoured by my petros and tropheus. Over time the rocks have developed a greenish tint to them which I like because it gives it an 'aged' look to it. I could use some nerites for my tank as well!

Home Depot sells timers for about $3.50 a piece..

                      Re: algae on holey rock?

You got some expert advice from people here.   This is what I think......do it all.

                      1) Get a timer and cut back on the lighting.
                      2) get them snails EK was talking about.....I have them and they keep my tank spotless. EK has a lot of them snails.  Can't speak for him....but you might want to buy some off him (if he is will to sell).  Ek always shows a lot of love on HFBers.
                      3) bristtlenose plecos will also work.

Note: don't go over the top......just cut the light time back a little (however you like and still be able to see your fish during the time you want to watch them). Don't get too many snails because them boys can do the job alone....just get a few.  I only have 10 in my 75 and they keep it clean.  Finally don't get too many plecos......maybe just a smaller nicer one (if you are into nice plecos).

Hope this helps and keep us updated!
