    Re: Real cloudy tank

OK..... the tank is clearing up really good, still a little cloudy, BUT now I see a little algae growing on top of some of the rocks. I remember reading on here somewhere someone put some kind of fish in the really cleaned up the rocks(holey rock) should I do this and what was the fish,I cant remember. Or do I do nothing yet!     Jack

      Re: Real cloudy tank

What color is the algae? If it's a brown color it's probably diatoms, which feed on silicates. They're common in new tanks and usually go away after they run out of food.

algae is green and its on the tops of the holey rocks, I figured something to do with bloom....I found the article about 8/9 after this that says different fish/snails that eat algae off rocks but should I wait just a little or go ahead and get them, Thanks for all the help!

Chinese Algae eater or any variant of this.  I would not do snails unless you want to be overrun with them in everything.

How long are you keeping your lights on and is your tank in the path of direct sunlight?

Leaving the light on too long can attribute to this.  Put them on a timer say noon-1pm to 8pm
There is no "normal" life, it's just life so get on with it.

                    Re: Real cloudy tank

Chinese algae eaters are pretty much worthless, it's the Siamese that you want....SAE's.
Snails are not that bad....you just have to get the ones that is useful and they won't overrun your tank.....actually they can't reproduce in freshwater = Nerites

As for the algae thing.....are you leaving the lights on all day?
The abundance of nutrients in your water right now coupled with light could be fueling the algae bloom.

If you choose to do SAEs - and they'll get along with the fish that you already have - get smaller SAEs. Adults don't adult algae as much as the young ones do.  It is fun to watch them school together as adults though. I saw some not too long ago at 1-800-SEAHORSE.
