  • Eheim 2260 filter question

OK call me stupid or whatever but I cant figure this one out.   I recently set up my 140 with a 2260 on it.   Works great and all is dead quiet filtering like a champ. Problem is that I got in such a hurry that I forgot to put shutoff valves on the each line going to the tank....Like an idiot.

I corrected this yesterday and valves are in place all is good....right. no wrong

I did a water change this morning by using the drain line. I am sitting there thinking how great is this.  I went and had breakfast(no I didnt stop checking on it) and then filled back up.man this is great and very easy

Now the pump is noisey as heck. It sounds as of its drawing air or cavitating which I shut everything off and disassembled it and then tried it again. I wanted to make sure there was not a leak anyplace. I also started and stopped it a few time to make sure it wasnt cavitating.

I can see small bubbles so I know they are coming from some place  but there is absolutely no water on the ground.

Does it just take a day or two for it to purge any air in the canister?   Any help would be great as this is frustrating.

Its air in there, shake the canister around rock it back n forth till no bubbles come out anymore.

Also make sure before you start this the lid is on good.

correct.   I never pulled the lid off. Just did a change and refill. I checked to make sure it was still tight.  ok just shook it around.  always scares me to do things like that. Just afraid something will get comprimised.

ITs got air in there, rock the filter back n forth, like waking your 8 year old to go to school after she stayed up to almost 11am because people came over after the auction to look at fish.

hehe   will do. I will let you know what happens. How do I prevent this in the future?

Is there a procedure you use to keep this from happening?

is it possible that the impeller could have come partially un attached.

              Re: Eheim 2260 filter question

ok added the new trophes tonight....yea.....so I had to flatten the tank to get some of the others out and wanted to re arrange things.

I reach down and felt the return and what is this??????  no output??? how can it be. I shook the hell out of this thing. Time to do the dirty and crack it open.

When I purchased it, it didnt have anything except the hardware. So stupid me puts the filter pads at the top and what you you think happened. Yes the pump tried to suck them right in blocking the intake to the pump.   I corrected this issue by moving the grating around and now we are back to 100% filtration. I did have to rock it back and forth but now we are good and its quiet again.

              Thanks for all the help.

                Re: Eheim 2260 filter question

One of the things you can do but it is messy, is fill the canister yourself completely to the top and then seal the lid and let the excess water overflow.  Then with the pump valve open, fill the canister till water comes to the top of the valve.

Then make your connections, and start the canister.

It will more likely make a little noise in the begining, but quickly goes away.
