  • Live plants please....

Okay guys, I'm going to get a few live plants tomorrow. I know this may sound stupid to many of you...but ehh...that hasn't stopped me before.
Is there any way for me to keep plants in my tank that don't require aqua soil?
I have sand and I'd like to keep it...can you grow plants in sand?
    I am pretty sure that I have adequate lighting....but I don't have CO2. (yet).

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

I've had some success with live plants and sand....I can't tell you what they where, but some actually did fairly well in the sand....

Alexarae you can grow cryptocorynes, Anubias, Java fern , most of the aquatic mosses and vals. Just see to it that the sand you get has a good grain size and does not compact. Once you get your CO2 going  you can try some stem plants like Rotala Rotundifolia,  Hygrophila species ,Ludwigia repens etc.

I'm a big believer in "Cheap" - I use sandblast sand and the plants do well.
But then, I have a lot of Fish Poop.   :winkle:

            Hmmmm...

That red temple looks familiar, Bob.

Alexa, I also have blasting sand in a couple of my planted tanks. Like Bob says, it works well. I also have one tank with SMS, one with Seachem Onyx and three with Seachem Fuorite. Aqua Soil may be the best according to some folks, but this reminds me of when Eco Complete first came on the market and everyone raved about how wonderful and indespensible it was. Plants are basically weeds and will grow in concrete if they get the chance.

                  Re: Live plants please....

I was reading today about some guy who was having success using a sand/kitty litter combination.  He was saying kitty litter is basically clay and the plants do really well in a muddy type substrate.  Plus, it is cheap.  I paid $20 for a pound of laterite and you can get a 25lb bag of kitty litter for $5 and they are both clay.

DJmatt...you're much more adventurous than me.
I think I'll let someone else try that one out before I do.
Anyone up to the challenge?  8O

armthehomeless used it in his planted tank...and it was gorgeous.....
so i don't think you could go wrong with kitty litter.....or potting soil that has no chemicals in it....

                        from  http://www.malloftheworld.com/aquarium/part2.htm

Of all the things I tried, Kitty Litter (clay) covered by about 1 1/2" of sand worked the best. Kitty Litter is really nothing but relatively clean dirt,
that's processed by heat. There is nothing to clean and is cheap and convenient to use.   Usually, I use about 1"-2" of Kitty Litter. Before I cover it with sand,
I add the fertilizer to the Kitty Litter.

There is no way for me to test all the hundreds of regional brands of kitty litter, however, there is one or two national brands that work if you can find them. One is Hartz Mt. the brand name is called "pH 5".  Oil-dri is another company that packages the clay for both kitty litter and to clean up oil spills on pavement.

Kitty litter is a generic term for anything used in a cat box. It can made of corn cob, newspaper pellets etc. These you want to avoid. Also,
the scoop able kind that comes in plastic bottle is no good.  The kitty litter we want is all natural clay with no additives like deodorizers.
It comes in paper sacks (like dry dog food) and I'm paying $3.00 for a 25lb. bag.

True that! :)  I used potting soil and capped it with fluorite. Tiapan did something similar and capped his with sand.
