i know you have.....
i'm sorry you had to learn this way....
but i strongly suggest a sponge filter in the tank....they suck up the nasty on the bottom and hold it in the sponges...
i clean my sponges when it appears they are full or when they just look yucky....i rinse them off in a bucket of tank water....then put them back.....

I always turn off the light when I throw a new fish in
